lock making

Just wondering- if you want to make an exact copy of a particular firearm you might have to make your own lock, or use internal parts and just make a lock plate, etc. Anyone make locks?

In cases like this the easiest approach is to use internals from an available lock - say a Siler. I’ve done this several times. Then fashion the lockplate from steel stock.

Or, buy a lock with just a rectangular lock plate, and then form it into whatever style you prefer.

Chambers sells a "gunmaker's lock" which has all the guts but with a oversized rectangle plate that you can shape as required.

Thanks- there are some originals in which the only way to get an exact copy is to make your own lock plate- the other issue is the **** or hammer- trying to figure that out.

on the gunmakers lock.. the everything is set and ready, if I'm not mistaken?? all ya' gotta do is figure out the shape and it's placement??( on the gun )

The Chambers Gunmaker’s flintlock ****, pan, and frizzen are style for a 1770s Germanic lock. If you want a different look it will require creative and knowledgeable re-shaping.

Chris Hirsch casts flint lock kits from originals. Not sure how many locks he has patterns for at the moment, but it must be several dozen by now. Here's a couple pictures of him and some of his wares at the CLA convention in August.

I have made several plates for Siler guts. Here is an early John Armstrong plate with Siler guts. Excuse the weird trigger, I made the stock too long.

I tried my hand at assembling a lock from a kit. Didn't work out too well. Couldn't get the frizzen hardened properly no matter what I did. Thought I had the hardening process down but it never would spark so I abandoned it, bought a ready made lock and kept the kit for spare parts.
