Long Range Muzzle Loading at Bisley 2023 (UK)

A good three days shooting at Bisley, 31 March - 2 April. First match of the season was the Long Range Rifles Branch of the MLAGB ‘Asquith Cup’. A testing enough match in good conditions, being fired with the military muzzle loading rifle at 600 & 800 yards, but the showery weather and brisk wind made it quite challenging! Sadly conditions deteriorated during the 800 yard shooting, with scope stands being blown over and heavy rain. Not all completed their detail (including me!). Despite not shooting at 800 yards, my 600 yard score was good enough to still gain third place in this aggregate match.

Saturday and Sunday was Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain matches at 300 & 200 yards respectively. While weather was dull and cool, the rain stayed away, and there was even a glimpse of sunshine during Sunday afternoon!

All in all, it was a great weekend getting back to Bisley, shooting and socialising with friends after the winter break. Looking forward to returning next month.

Another great weekend away at the National Shooting Centre, Bisley, target rifle shooting with friends from throughout the UK, Jersey, France and Netherlands. Shooting was a combined weekend of events with the Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain and Long Range Rifles Branch of the MLAGB.

Friday was a range practice session at 500 yards in the morning and the LRR Volunteer Trophy Match at 600 yards in the afternoon. It was a grumpy dull day, with some showers and sunny spells. I used the day for some load evaluation with black powder cartridge rifle. Saturday was the MLAGB 500 yard National Championships for Enfield and match rifle. It was miserably wet the whole day; consequently not everyone shot both (or even any) matches. I just fired my Enfield rifle. Sunday saw the LRR 900 yard Championship in the morning and 1000 yard practice in the afternoon. It started dull for the match, but the afternoon saw much bright sunshine. This brought its own problems of changeable wind and a lively mirage! A good learning opportunity for the conditions. I was pleased with 4th place at 900 yards in a close run event - just two points behind the winner.

It was nice also to spend time socialising with friends in the evenings, with a meal and drink at the club houses on Camp. The ranges at Bisley were established in 1890, when the NRA(UK) moved their Annual Rifle Meeting from Wimbledon.

9-11 June I enjoyed three days target shooting at Bisley, Surrey (UK), shooting with the Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain and the Long Range Rifles Branch of the MLAGB. No competitions on Friday when we shot at 500 and 900 yards. Saturday was the LRR 1000 yard Championship - shooting the 30 shots got quite uncomfortable with temperatures soaring above 30 degC! Sunday was the MLAGB 600 yard Championships, with two 15 shot matches, one for Enfields and one for Match Rifle. As usual at such events there's a good mix of original and reproduction rifles in use.

I fared reasonably, finishing 4th at 1000 yards and 4th again at 600 yards in the Enfield match. Managed a little better with Match Rifle at 600 yards, tieing for first place... A bull's eye scores 5, but inside that ring is a smaller ring (the v-bull), which counts an additional .1 each shot within it. My score of 66.4 was beaten by one v-bull, with friend John scoring 66.5. It's tough at the top!

What was however immensely satisfying was that I had equaled the MLAGB National Record, and John set a new record. Well done John!

A lovely weekend shared with friends from the UK, Jersey and Netherlands. Nice to be able to relax in the evenings and chat over a meal and a drink.

Storm Antoni hit the UK on Saturday 5 August, with strong winds and heavy rain throughout the day. Unfortunately this meant cancellation of the planned 900 and 1000 yard shooting.... However, we were able to shoot in much better conditions at Bisley on Sunday, albeit with a strong playful headwind to contend with! So, pictured are a couple of photos of muzzle loading match rifle shooting at 1100 and 1200 yards. All members of Long Range Rifles Branch of the MLAGB.
