Many years ago I fell while duck hunting, and plugged a shotgun with some mud and ice. I thought I had scraped enough of the ice out - but learned I was wrong when I blew up the end of the barrel. I didn't have another gun - or the means to buy one, so I took a hacksaw to the end of the barrel, cut off all the shards and hunted with it (chokeless) for years. (As long as the birds were close, I shot lights out!) I think this stock and barrel could be shortened, serviceable, and still provide a reminder that when firearms are involved, one should always pay attention to what one is doing!

Dude and Cynthialee - that's exactly what I was thinking. Of course, we may not be privy to the stresses applied to the whole rifle. Welcome, Blacksmith58!
