I've contacted Green Mountain, TOTW, Midway, etc. trying to find a .58 cal Green Mountain barrel for a 1" T/C Hawken/Renegade. Does anybody know where I can find one? Thanks.

Thanks, roundball. I contacted Tip last week but he had nothing. Just went to Cain's website and was so close, as they had a variety of barrels, but no .58.

Call there 800 # tomorrow and talk to owner Ed or Son Scott...they've been a good size TC and GM dealer for quite a few years...may have barrels in stock thet are not listed on their website and/or may know of other places to find one for you...

Been looking for one for a spell myself( I blame ol' Mr. Roundball for this new obsession for a 58  ) and also ran into the same dead ends. So I e-mailed GM about 2 weeks ago and they said that they are making them and will be available for sale in a couple of months. Hmmmm time to start sweet talking the wifey for my x-mas present

KW, that "couple of months" story is just about nine months old now. I luckily found one in unused condition for a fellow who just didn't like the feel of it but never shot it. Lucky me, I love it!

roundball, good suggestion. I'll do that. Thanks.

A couple of weeks ago I called the T/C Hawken Custom Shop and inquired about barrels. They do make .58 caliber barrels to fit a Hawken, but you have to wait about 3 months to get it. If I recall correctly, they were around $170 or so. I wouldn't mind getting one of those, but they have the standard T/C 1-48" twist and I want a roundball shooter.

It's a shame that GM has evidently wound down their drop-in barrel operation...wish some existing barrel company like Rice/Rayl, or even TC...would step up to the plate and start making .40 & .58cal drop-in round ball barrels.

I believe the Oregon barrel Company makes drop ins. Go to the Gunworks web site. The barrels are expensive though.

Yes, the Oregon Barrel Co. barrels are expensive and they do not have sights on them nor are they either blued or browned.

roundball, Ed from Cain's responded to my email and said they did not have any .58 GM barrels. I called the T/C Custom shop and ordered a .58 barrel, minus the QLA. They said it might take around 14 weeks to get it, though. I figure if Green Mountain gets their .58s back into production that I can always cancel the T/C order.

I just ordered the GM IBS 58 barrel from Midway-USA ,the sales rep said they were expecting them to arrive in September,210.00 shipped to my door.Looking forward to shooting a round ball barrel. "Good luck" in your search.

I have had a GM 58 barrel on order from Midway since Dec 2008. The date Midway lists as the date they expect the barrel in stock is a moving target. It seems to be revised weekly and always stays a week or so ahead. I have been watching it since 2008.

I am glad to see an estimate from Green Mountain of 14 weeks. Maybe it is finally in their production schedule.

Exactly right, Midway keeps moving the date further out, but I ordered one anyway. Whichever one comes in first, T/C or GM, will be the one I keep and I will cancel the other order. KV, I think you misread my post - it's T/C that estimates 14 weeks to make my .58 barrel.

GM Customer Service told me a couple of weeks ago that because of their filling military contracts for barrels, they had put other barrels on the backburner and they can't really say when they'll be producing these again.

Sorry to hear GM does not have 58s in their schedule yet.

I looked at the same options in Feb and I did not order the TC barrel because as I recall it has a 1:48 twist.

I am sure you will have the TC in 14 weeks.

I think I found a GM .58 at Jedediah Starr, at least I placed an order for one. We'll see if they actually have one, or if they just have not updated their site.

Well, Jedediah Starr's site was not updated, so they actually did not have a GM .58 barrel in stock. However, the T/C Hawken .58 that I ordered on 20 Aug arrived yesterday. I was told it was going to be a 14 week wait, if not longer, because I ordered it without the QLA, and all it took was 2 weeks. The barrel looks just like my .54, same length and width, with "Hawken" stamped on it and ".58". Of course, it makes for a lighter rifle, too, with the bigger hole. I wanted a slow twist barrel, like 1-66", but all they could do was 1-48", so it'll be interesting to see how it shoots with PRBs.

I've got a couple of TC Big Boar 58's plus a custom 58, all with 1:48, plus a GRRW 58 with something slower- around 1:70.

If there's a difference between them shooting PRBs, I'm not good enough to find it. They're all very good. I'm betting you'll be really pleased.

Ditto what brown bear said. I have a 1-48 50 that puts em in the same hole at 50 yards. Ya might just have to clean a little more between shots.
Some original Hawkens were 1-48 from what ive read.
Dont worry it willl shoot.

I have a custom .50 barrel that is 1/56 twist. Rate of twist is not the main difference between it and the TC 1/48 barrel.

TC barrels, at least the majority of their production MLs, are button rifled. I have read that the deepest rifling obtainable with a tungsten carbide button is .008" and many are nearer .006". My custom barrel has cut rifling that is .012" deep to better engage the patch/ball combination.

Larger caliber accuracy past 50 yards with a shallow groove quick twist barrel and a PRB depends on a tight ball patch combo and relatively light powder charges to keep from stripping the rifling. The smaller the bore the lighter the ball and therefore less kinetic energy resisting the spin a barrel is trying to impart.
