This has been a good day!!
I was tellin a fellow shooter at work about my fixer upper rifle.
He tells me to stop by on the way home.
I get there and he says you need a horn for that
old gun,and some lead.
He gave me a buffalo horn and 150# of sheet lead!!
Boy oh Boy am I going to be busy!
I will need some advise on how to finish the horn. Its rough and right off the critter!

Boo

I forgot to ask, the horn is all black
but has alot of crusty tan stuff on it.
Just the old outer shell?

Boo :hmm:

The tan crusty stuff is either dirt or the outer layer of horn. It will need to be scraped and sanded and steel wooled to get it nice and smooth. for more info on powder horns either find copies of "the book of buckskinning 1 and 2, or just Google it on the computer.(I just did and had over 300,000 hits to weed through). There are also other books out there on the powder horn, you just have to look to find them.I hope this helps.

Hey Boo If you go to muzzle loading links there is a link to Powder horns by Ron Vail. I think it will be a help.
