I can only speak for personal LH experience. It makes no whoop to me if a capper is left or right, so long as the stock fit is decent. But there's a huge difference in left and right flinters. Basically I'll never own another RH flinter.

If that sentiment translates to the population as a whole, I can see them dropping the LH cappers first if they need to trim their line. But I'm sure hoping that's not a sign that LH flinters are on the list to be cut eventually, too.
 
I have been spot checking the Lyman site for reconditioned muzzleloaders for other guys.They have not posted any in 1 YEAR! :hmm: Before they had them every couple months in all models.Not sure what is up.
 
:( The problem is priorities my friend.... I've been unemployed since September of last year.... What cash I've been able to make from officiating has gone directly into the household coffers.... My Ref pay is what has generally gone to pay for toys, vacations, shooting expenses.... So I get to be frustrated by all the deals I just cannot act on.

I wasn't really posting to you. I was pointing out that they did make a LH caplock once.

It doesn't matter to me either. I'm shooting a RH caplock Hawken now, and i'm shooting it left handed.

However, it does make a difference when a gun has a cheek piece.
 
BTW - I was on the Lyman site a week or so ago and IRRC, they did have the LH Cap Lock listed.... The list of available guns is a bit shorter now than it was when I last looked.

Ok, I just talked to Lyman. They have no clue why it's not showing on their web site, but they still sell LH caplocks.
 
I think that I saw at least one in Dixon's a couple or three weeks ago! Don't remember if it was a .50 or .54 LH cap lock.

I went out hunting for a couple of hours just now. I was hunting rabbits and had some tubes loaded with 55 gr of Swiss.

It was cold, so I was wearing thermals, t-shirt, sweatshirt, wool shirt, and a Levi's sheepskin jacket. I mention this to let you know I had some padding.

My first shot felt like a .22. I was more aware on the next two shots and realized how soft the recoil felt. As an experiment I dumped in two tubes. So, now we have 110 gr of Swiss. I figured a pretty good load, and more than i'd probably hunt with. I picked a knot in a tree about 50 yds away and pulled the trigger.

It bucked pretty good with lots of good looking smoke and a pretty good bang. I noticed all that, but I didn't notice any discomfort with the recoil. The muzzle jumped up a foot, but nothing bothered me.

So, the recoil can be solved with some padding. I'm going to buy one of those pads you strap on your shoulder for recoil. I saw a left hand version at Buffalo Arms for about $40. Probably the best money I can spend.

I did notice the 110 gr loads weren't very accurate. Probably 90 gr should be good. I'll have to test.

I have a deer story that happened today, but i'm going to put it in the hunting forum.
 
I bought a LH Deerslayer capper for my son, several years ago. I ordered it from the local gunshop.
It does have a cheekpiece. Good shooter. :thumbsup:
 
The first GPR I owned had a real radical curve to the butt. Being uninformed I shot the thing in the pocket of my shoulder like my deer rifle and suffered greatly. Then, since I was living in Mountain Man country at the time (Williams, Arizona) a friend patiently taught me to shoot it off of the top of my arm. What a difference. Stupid = discomfort. The 50 caliber with 70 gr ffg has no kick at all that I can tell, since I was enlightened.
 
I finally shot the Deerstalker. I began with 100gr p-fffg Hogdon Pyrodex, and Walmart blue ticking greased with Bore Butter. I'm not sure what thickness the ticking is. My group wasn't consistant at all, thowing the balls 4 inches every direction from center at 50 yards. I changed to a thinner white sheet patch and that didn't help. Dropped the charge to 90gr same powder with the white sheet and that calmed it down some, but still not consistant. Dropped the same powder to 80gr and it shot pretty good. Changed back to the Walmart ticking and it settled right in to center. Nice small group. Shot a few loads at 100yds with the same powder charge, ticking and Butter and it'll kill at that distance. That's my load for this gun. The gun is a pleasure to shoot. Recoil is light and easy on the shoulder because of the rubber pad and because it's only curved slightly. The trigger has a nice smooth pull and is about the weight I like for hunting, so no work or change is needed there. I'm not sure what pound pull the trigger is factory set at but it works. No rise on the barrel with 80gr powder shooting off a rolled up hunting coat laying on the hood of my truck. The Deerstalker feels good and is about as comfortable 50cal as I've shot, and I've shot allot. This gun would be great for a youth or woman because it's easy on the body. I'm getting older and it's easy on my body too. In fact I'm taking it deer hunting tommorrow morning before turkey time. It's a keeper. I like it. K45
 
Good luck with the hunt, and I'm glad to hear of your success with the loading. Sounds like you've found the "sweet-spot" for that rifle. Also glad to hear of your use of the recoil pad. They are worth their weight in gold when you need them! :thumbsup:

What a coincidink !! My son's Deerstalker, it's a .50 BTW, works best with 80 gr. Triple 7 . It shoots well with Ball-ets just as well as PRB. :thumbsup:
