I bought 2 GPR. 2 weeks ago (new). One from one well known company and the wood was very plain stained, then other wood looked like stained ash. awful color. They came from two separate businesses. The other from another well known company on both rifles the bluing have a very light blue that I can see the metal through the blue. I am very disappointed in the quality. I just can't live with this and don't know what to do.it looks like the made the flats of the barrel with a disc sander, lots of swirls. Does anyone know where I can send these off to be re blued? In the Stock making world the call this wood Pallett walnut. Makes me cringe because I had hi anticipation on getting them. Someone that may have a fast turn around. I guess I'm too picky. I know they are not Pedersoli's. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

From the OP, "I've been reading some bad reports on the current production rifles".

That has been a bunch of folks opinions for the last 5 years or so.

Welcome to the world of Lyman.

Send them both back and buy a Gemmer from Muzzle-Loaders.

I want to clarify something. Jedidiah starr company has been great to me. Im sorry I put their name down, but it wont let me edit my post. My point was I ordered from 2 well-known companies both of them top notch but I got the same results on the 2 lymans.

Id like to get the Gemmer from Muzzle-loaders but they were out.

I'd wait until they get the one you want. I've had 5 Lyman GPR's and one Gemmer. The difference is worth waiting. Muzzle-Loaders must have told Investarms to get the quality up.. Mine had a nice piece of wood with a good oil finish. Metal to wood fit was way better than the Lyman version.

I was disappointed in the the trigger though. Just like the Lyman the set rear trigger is too hard to set.

Thanks mountain man

So are these the older GPRs made by investarms for Lyman? Or are these the newer signature series made by Pedersoli for Lyman?
Maybe Im misunderstanding but didn’t Lyman drop investarms because of quality issues? Now investarms is making the Gemmer ?

Mountain man can you speak to the quality of the Investarms Gemmer vs the new signature series made by Pedersoli for Lyman? The Gemmer is much cheaper.

I have bought 2 pedersoli Hawkens within the last month and the quality is great- very very good.
Which Pedersoli Hawken did you buy? There are several to choose from and they are different.

The Rocky Mountain Hawken?
Muzzle Loading Rifles model Rocky Mountain Hawken "walnut" Rifle (davide-pedersoli.com)

The Traditional Hawken (Target Model) Not a traditional Hawken's Plains Rifle but closer to a Hawken/Gemmer target rifle?
Muzzle Loading Rifles model Traditional Hawken Target Rifle percussion model (davide-pedersoli.com)

The Traditional Hawken Hunter Model which is kind of a fantasy rifle?

Or the Lyman branded, Pedersoli assembled Hawken Signature Series?
Great Plains Signature Series (lymanproducts.com)

For what it is worth...bought a Lyman Deer Stalker back in 2020. Investarms barrel a tack driver right out of the box. I put it into an older Cabelas Hawkin Stock as the new one was too plain. Still have the "stock" Stock just in case. It my go to rifle believe it or not.

I bought 2 Hawkens signature series. The quality was great. I am very happy with them both. Barrels are even coned. Bluing is excellent.

Pedersoli is making the "Lyman Great Plains Signature series" Very well made. Investarms is making the Gemmer so I heard. Anything that I own or have seen that pedersoli makes is top quality. "Clarify", I havent seen them all.

That’s what I’m curious about. I own a Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken percussion and I love it beautiful rifle. Looking at getting one of the planes rifles in a flintlock and I was just going to purchase the Lyman by Pedersoli until I saw this thread talking about the Gemmer‘s. Since they are a bit cheaper I was curious of the quality compared to Lyman’s signature rifle.

I cant speak for the Gemmer. The Pedersoli Hawken Is much better than the Lyman Hawken. The trigger guard, the bluing, the front sight, the wood to metal fit, the barrels are coned (at least the 2 of mine), I think they are on the Gemmer also. The finish. All these are much better than the Lyman Hawken. I have looked everywhere and can't find the Gemmer Hawken (new) for sale. I think it was Bubba on this forum said, "be careful buying (used) muzzleloaders on the internet". They may be in a lot worse shape than they are described. They may even have a UNFIRED charge still in them!! If this wasn't you Bubba that said this, I'm sorry to quote you wrong? But whoever said it, it was some of the best advice on this forum I have seen. BE CAREFUL!! I actually have 3 Pedersoli's Hawkens. One I bought a couple of years ago. They all 3 are quality. The bluing on them are second to none! Lyman's bluing is disappointing. I hope this helps. This is all my opinion only.

One other thing. The Pedersoli Hawkens lock plate is color case hardened (beautiful) on all 3. My Lyman' look to me to be fire hardened with a torch. Dull looking, Pedersoli's are colorful. I am speaking about the 2 Lyman great plains I bought recently, DULL.

Sorry if this is getting confusing here but we are discussing 3 different guns. Lol.
1) New or newer Gemmer by investarms
2) The older style Lyman Great Plains by investarms
3 Lyman Great Plains Signature series by Pedersoli
So to clarify Your last two Lyman signature series were dull?

The lock plates finish is looks dull on the Lyman Great Plains compared to the signature series Pedersoli. I was commenting on the Lyman Great Plains made by Investarms (I have heard) and the Pedersoli Great Plains Series. I was just trying to help, if it doesn't help just ignore it. I cant find a Gemmer to buy to compare to these 2 brands. I would take the advice of Mtnman or Buba, I think they know more about them than me.

Yes MDHunter the newer Lyman Great plains are very low quality compared to the newer Pedersoli Great Plains Series.
