I have nearly finished a lyman GPR kit but am having a little trouble. When i browned the barrel everything came out fine except for a section around the breach plug. the barrel is browned nicely but the last inch around the touch hole is not uniform. There is actually a uniform line all the way around the barrel about 1/4 inch ahead of the touch hole back to the breach plug which separates where the browning took well and where it didn't. Has anyone had this problem with these kits? Suggestions besides taking it all off and starting again? It almost acts like the metal in that region was treated differently duirng the manufacture???

Are you talking about where the seam or joint is where the barrel breech butts up to the breeck plug? That has happened to me before and can be remedied. The brown didn't take there because of oil or grease between the two mating surfaces. What I have done is heat the breech up a little with a torch and degrease with a rag soaked in acetone. Not hot just warm. The warming of the breech will bring the oil out so you can degrease with the acetone. Do this outside. Acetone is not good for you. While the barrel is still warm slap a little Plum Brown on there and it will brown right up.

The line i am having trouble with is different i think. It is actually on all 8 sides of the barrel about 1/4 of an inch forward of the touch hole. rearward of this line the browning didnt take - this is where the breech plug is inside the barrel. perhaps it had exces oil as you mentioned but i thought it was odd that it was such a well defined line???
