Awe, shucks Dad, don't worry about us kids....somebody just has a bee her 'er bonnet.

You have some options to fix your gaps but by mixing dust and glue you are basically making cheap wood filler....it just doesn't like to take stain.

You can color it with dye as you mix it and then put it in, but then you have to make the rest of the stock match the patch instead.

You can use colored wax after then find find a colored wood filler that matches the stock after it's stained.

If your set on not reinletting then another option is to glue in slivers of the same wood from a hidden place in the stock like the barrel channel, or better yet, under the buttplate. Make sure the joint is tight so when you stain it the glue line won't show.

Just some thoughts. Enjoy, J.D.

Well, after ebiggs comment, I don't know if I'm an "expert" or not but in my opinion the glue and wood can be used but only as a last resort.

Are you using some sort of transfer medium to show you what is causing the little gaps?

You may know this already but if you apply a very light coat of bright red lipstick to the surface of the metal part and then place it in position against the wood, the lipstick will transfer to the little high areas that need to be removed.

Buy yourself a tube of lipstick in a color that your significant other wouldn't wear on a bet so you aren't accused of pilfering it.

When you see the interfering wood, highlighted by the lipstick, lightly sand it off and then repeat the lipstick on the metal and the metal against the wood.

When the gap around the buttplate (or whatever metal part your working on) is small enough that a piece of computer paper won't slip into the crack your done.
A gap smaller than the .003 thickness of the paper will be virtually invisible after the gun is finished and assembled.

thats great idea ! im afraid the gaps are actualy due to where i may have been a little overzealous with my rasp, thats why im was gonna stay away from taking anymore wood off......and i was thinking of going with a natural nood and just some clear finish so could i color some filler to match ? most of the wood is a good fit just a sporadic gap here and there

Bryon, I've come a little late to the party, but I wouldn't give up on a better fit just yet. When I get that close I start using scrapers, or even the very sharp edge of a parting chisel as a scraper. You can even practice on the inner part of the butt that doesn't show, to get a feel for the wood. Patience my brother.

I agree. Use this as an opportunity to learn. You'll find there's a lot of satisfaction in getting a good fit. There's very little risk vs. reward here....don't give up yet.

Good Luck and Enjoy, J.D.

i agree with Robby and JD ... keep at it, go slow & sorta 'sneak up on it,' and you'll have the fit you want, instead of a compromise.

good luck with your project.

make good smkoke!

Suggestions on 'how to' finish the gun are totally separate from suggestions of how it should look to satisfy your taste. He still needs to make the gun the way he wants it. Not some arbitrary way you think it needs to be.
And if it isn't done right the first time he can certainly redo it until it is. Even to the point of replacing, yes dare I say, just a piece of wood.

Earnie, People ask questions or for suggestions, if I can help, I help. Suggestions is all I offer as I can't make anybody do anything they don't want to do.

Apparently I've really gotten under your skin somehow and you want to keep poking me in open forum rather than discuss it. I think you make it obvious who's "arbitrary." :shake:

Enjoy, J.D.

For what it 's worth ,you are very close to right and it's at this point that many get impatient and say "good enough" and it is good enough ,but ,if you want it truly nice and right have a go with scrapers and get some inlet black or lipstick and get yer patient pants on!If you don't you'll probably see it for a long time.
