Came home yesterday with a Lyman Great Plains Pistol in .54 cal, now I have both in the same caliber.

Percussion? That's the setup I'd like to have.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m really glad you stopped in to tell us how bad our rifles are. I always forget that expensive guns kill stuff deader than my lowly production rifles.

I have 2, a flint and a percussion, both .50. I like the flint for a number of reasons, much so, the percussion remains unfired. The styling is as close to custom as you get. I think its funny that the GPR is light years better than the Ped. "Traditional" Hawken. I would like to get a .54 Flint barrel for mine.

I got a good deal on it as a "new, old stock" rifle and have been pretty happy with how it shoots - 1st deer I shot (at about 60 yards) was a DRT kill, and am planning on refinishing the stock after this season. Already replaced the rear sight on my GPR 54 with a Marbles Bullseye sight, which improved my groups with my less than perfect vision. I still felt the inner diameter was too big and the webbing of the inner ring was too thin, so I bought some small diameter steel tubing from McMaster Carr and press fit a short piece into the sight. Now the sight picture is even better (for me).

Got a lefthand .40 bore in 2009 supplied with a rifling cutting die made from a piece of the barrel.


I'm shooting these now also.

Also have a .54GPH barrel for it.

The GPR is a .54 flinter, lefthand.

There are a number of Lyman GPR users out there including me and as fall is approaching. I think we should talk a little about our guns . This is one of the few production guns that looks kind-of like the Hawkin profile that we all love. When I got back into Black Powder 5 years ago this was the only reasonably priced "Plains Rifle" that I could find. Mine cost about $500 back then and although not perfect is a good shooter and a robust design. The new Pedersoli GPR's look even better than the old Investarms ones did and are a bit more expensive but reasonable compared to any kind of simi production gun.

My hunting load is a .530 swaged ball ,110 grs. of Graff FFF, .015 TC pre lubed patches and CCI or Remington #11 caps. Although I haven't killed anything but paper with it , I love to carry it around in the woods.

I would really love to see what some of you guys have done with the kit built version. So post about your GPR , add pictures , tell us what you like , and lets get excited about Fall which is right around the corner.

Not a kit gun, bought in 2003 or 2004, didn’t like the sluggish hammer fall and stiff un-set trigger. I reshaped and shortened the fly, then polished the dickens out of it and sear area contacted ( below notch). This took the ‘hump’ out of my hammer fall. I then cut two coils off the sear spring which helped a lot with un-set trigger pull. 90 gr RS, .535 swaged ball, .015 ticking, grape seed oil/beeswax lube. It has been a fine rifle ever since….

I had a young lad ask me what to get in way of a muzzle loading Rifle. Knowing he was going to college and strapped for funds I suggested he get a kit rifle and I would help him put it together. He opted for the Lyman GPR kit .54 cal.. It was before they were making the 1:48 twist.I think it was 1:66 twist? We put it together and browned all the bare parts. And when the weekend came we took it out for a test run. The main thing was to see if it funtioned properly not to dial it in. I set a gallon jug full of water out to about 50 yards and loaded the rifle using the same load as I used in my Ithaca Hawkin. That boy shot at the jug and the jug exploded! It surprised me being it was the first shot from the rifle and he had never shot one before,. He acted like it was a normal thig? If he only knew? LOL! I personally like the Lyman GPR it is well made but wish they would make a better looking snail . I am a little anal, sorry!

Later we moved to a state that requires a larger diameter for muzzleloaders but says a dinky low powered lever action is just fine. And the deer here all have names.

I feel your pain. Relocated from ND to arkansa and now have pets that play with dogs....Sink6 says no putting 'suzy' in the freezer.

I certainly like mine with fast twist...RB are pretty accurate too.

They run all over the place.
Keeping them out of the flower and vegetable gardens takes a lot of brain sweat.
The ranges would be so close as to make the .54 flinter GPR seem like overkill even for the older big bucks.

I was at one of my friends shooting range once trying out a pistol that had problems. I had shot severals round when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I was taken back when I realised that it was a full grown doe ? She was less than 20 yards from me just standing there stareing at me.

Finally made it back to the range. The shots by my thumb are my last two. This is with a .490 ball, .0220 ticking, 80 grains of pyrodex, and the much hated bore butter for lube. I can live with this. Now on to 100 yards on my next trip!

The patches I found look pretty good to me. Well, that one has a chunk gone. Don’t know what’s up with that.
