I decided to sell my Lyman Great Plains .50 muzzle-loading rifle. I just don't shoot this one anymore. She's not a safe queen, and shows some handling, but she is a solid, accurate rifle. I purchased this rifle from the second owner. He acquired it as part of an estate sale, but had no interest in it and never shot it. The original owner, as I was told, assembled the rifle from a kit, but didn’t shoot it much. When I got the rifle, it was dusty and had dried grease throughout, so I gave it a thorough cleaning before I took it to the range. I put less than 20 rounds through it myself, at ranges from 25 yards out to 100 yards. Using Hornady swaged round balls, T/C pre-lubed patches, and 60 grains of Goex FFFG black powder, the rifle grouped as well as my eyes can see with the open sights, typically 1” groups at 25 yards, 2-3” at 50 yards, and 8” at 100 yards. I had intended to deer hunt with the rifle, but never did. She needs to go to a good home, where someone can enjoy shooting at paper, or taken on a hunt.
FULL DISCLOSURE:
The bore is shiny, with sharp, deep rifling. There is some “speckling” in the grooves, but patched round balls load smoothly, and shoot accurately.
The walnut stock is solid, with no cracks or chips.
The barrel, lock, and steel hardware are browned, and show finish wear from handling. A previous owner relocated the rear sight, so there is a dove-tail where the sight used to reside. Also, please note that the barrel appears to have been draw-filed, and the stampings are light as a result.
The lock is smooth; the double-set triggers are crisp.
Brand new HOT-SHOT nipple installed, but never used.
Like I said, she’s not a safe queen, and could be refinished if one so desires. She functions fine as is. I know prettier rifles can be found, so I’m pricing this one with that in mind. I'm asking $475 shipped. Thanks for looking!
