I always remove my clean-out plugs, but use white lithium grease on its threads as well as those on the nipple. Although I don't remember what the GPR thread size and pitch are, it is not at all difficult to drill and tap for a 6 x 32 set screw available from Lowes, Home Depot, etc.

Well I finally got my rifle back yesterday from the gunsmith.
He drilled and tapped and installed a 6x48 screw into the hole. Looks great. Will take it out this week to shoot. Costs me $30. Not too bad. Thanks to everyone who responded orig. to my question. I really appreciate the help. Have a great day !!

there is no need to remove the plug. put the barrel in a bucket of hot soapy water. use a range rod with cleaning patch and pump it up and down. this will remove all residue. then pour boiling water down the muzzle and dry and oil it.
