Did a fair amount of shooting today with my .36 SMR. It was not pretty, but you got to show the bad with the good. I had the rifle pretty well dialed in already but I wanted to tweak it for Squirrel hunting. My shooting was off, I’d swear my vision gets worse every year 😎. Was shooting from the bench at 25 & 35 yards. Using .350 cast RBs, .022 patches, and a 1 to 4 ratio Dawn & water lube. I had previously settled on 35 gr of Swiss 3F, but I went back to 30 gr and then up to 40 gr. Seemed like the 40 gr load was printing well so I made a couple of sight adjustments and tried shooting at the squirrel targets. I just could not see them clearly as the results show. But I’ll try again tomorrow. Was using Goex 4F for prime, zero issues with the rifle besides retightening the jaw screw a couple of times. Also had zero problems with fouling. I did swab the bore after about 15 shots but it really wasn’t necessary. The squirrels are relatively safe for now.

Your gonna have to bight the bullet and go with peep sights or try scare em to death .

Hell Walt, I can’t even see with peep sights!
Well bud I have the strongest readers going and a stigmatizen in each eye and regular sights are a blur heck even the front sight on my trade gun is fuzzy at times and the barrels only 26” s .I don’t know what to tell you except maybe you best think about just using that nice new trade gun you got and forget the rest that’s what I did .Look at it this way you can probably see the front sight good enough to hit something at 50 yards and with 7/8 to 1 1/4 ounces of shot no worries .Just a suggestion my friend that’s why we shoot smoothbores so we don’t have hit the bull just hit what we’re pointing at .And that’s all we do with a smoothbore is basically point them sights don’t help much anymore for most of us cause we can’t see them plain and simple .No shame in getting old just have to improvise with age if you know what I trying to say .any way good luck .

This is the time of my families annual black powder hunt in Daniel Boone national Forest! We camp for 3 to 4 days and hunt the woods hard! Here’s my oldest son with my father in the blind last night! Then this is me brokenhearted because I’m stuck on a large drywall job! I’m also building a house for me and the family! We are blessed! Basement is just about move in ready but we’re supposed to be out of the rental by the end of the month… So no brakes for hunting with my smoke poles!!

Had better results today shooting my .36 SMR. I worked the load back down to 30 grains of Swiss 3F and after a couple of sight adjustments I’m happy with it. Still used the .350 cast balls, .022 linen patches, 1:4 Dawn:water lube, and Goex 4F prime. I swabbed the barrel after about 15 shots but it wasn’t too bad. I was surprised at the impact rise at 35 yards but just a slight change in point of aim took care of it. But I doubt I’ll make many shots past 25 yards on squirrels. Picked up a few patches and they were all good.
