All my shooting with this pistol had been with bore butter, no problems. I picked up some prelubed .010 patches with the 2000 lube. When loading the third shot I felt some stiffness so after firing I ran a clean patch down the barrel. When I went to pull it out it would not budge. Pulled harder and the end came off the pistol's rod. Now I had a patch, jag and rod tip stuck in the bottom of the barrel. Ended up shooting it out, course it hit a rock and mashed in a corner of the rod tip. Great day! :cursing:

The patches may have been the problem rather than the lube. Just a thought but sometimes I find that using two thin of a patch actually hurts in a way as it doesn't fill out enough and blow some of the excess fouling out of the bore when being fired. Then after a few shots when the fouling starts to fill out and harden you find a similar situation. Just a thought. In my .54 plains pistol I use a .020 patch and a .530 round ball.

Sounds like fouling and a dry patch problem. When wiping between shots always moisten them with some spit or lube. Straighten up the ram rod tip. Use J B weld to reapply it then pin the tip. If the tip is beyond repair Track of the Wolf has them. Even in a new gun I always pin the rod tips, if they haven't been already.

Thanks for the advise, when shooting the bore buttered patches I was using .018 and went to the .010 for easier loading,(which they were). I might try the .015 next, oh, my balls were .530. :hmm:

The basic problem with pre-lubed patches is there's no way to know how long they've been on the shelf at the shop or an even longer at the supplier or wholesale outlets. They may have gone dry or have suffered some other temp or humidity problem. Plastic bag doesn't mean 'sealed'. Freshly lubed patching you've done yourself answers a lot of questions.

Excellent point and I will be relubing them. I had no problem with them in my 45 cal rifle. The 54 pistol sure didn't like them. :idunno:

Track of the Wolf had the whole ramrod for $11.99, so I just got it. Could not find just the tip. With S&H it was $17.99. Back in the saddle again.

New ramrod arrived today from TOTW, 1/2 inch longer than original and pinned on both ends. It also is threaded on both ends, 10-32 on one end, 8-32 on the other. It is also slightly thinner than the original rod. Very happy, thanks Track of the Wolf, Inc. :hatsoff:
