Have just purchased a Lyman Trade 50cal Percussion. What would be a good starting load using fffg and .490 round ball.
New to Black Powder.Have been around firearms since Moses was a boy.
Regards Dave

My son has one and it does well with 60g ffg and and has another sweet spot at around 80g.
start with 60g and work your way up till you find what it likes. Oh! we use .018 pillow ticking
by the way.

the 1 in 48 twist barrel doesn't seem to handle the heavier loads (90 to 100g) as well as my slow twist GPR.

Now go make some smoke!!!

They are a sweet shooting rifle. My friend let me shoot his a couple of times. great deer gun too.
Like to have one myself, but first have to thin down some of my T.C.'S.

Go get em mate. Don't ever be tempted to use any quantity of smokeless powder in your rifle unless you want to make the news for all the wrong reasons. Best to use only real black powder. Wano brand is available in most places. FFFg will most likely work and load the best but FFg is also useable.

Do yourself a favour and buy a copy of Sam Fadalas muzzleloading guide (not sure of title) & go through the archives on this forum & learn away. The .50 cal ball with 70 plus grains (by volume) of blackpowder should be good enough for all our critters up to red deer with broadside shots inside of 80 yards.

Cleanliness is everything. Don't let the sun set on a dirty barrel is a good rule and give it a thorough clean including popping 3 - 4 caps between cleaning and loading your first shot.

Enjoy your shooting and hunting. They are the most fun you can have with your pants on and will make a real hunter out of you. Shoot me a PM if need be.

Cheers.

I bought a used Lyman gpr. Seller said he couldn't get it to shoot well. Got it home and found the barrel filthy. The edges of the lands where like a minurature saw, they cut the patching and gotten full of lead.

Lapped it with JB.

Check your patches for tears. Both ball and cleaning patches.

Front sight also needed attention.

Some people don't like Sam's book, but when I was learning "on my own" his book was an invaluable reference and learning tool. The title is "The Complete Blackpowder Handbook"
http://www.amazon.com/The-Complete-Blackpowder-Handbook-Fadala/dp/0896893901

Unfortunately I see that the cover has forsaken the pics of beautiful traditional guns and has an unmentionable on it. :td: :barf: But the info on it says it still covers traditional arms.
