Yes indeed, that's a cap post. I install them all the time. They are a pain in the backside on the pocket models however they serve 2 functions, first is to keep cap fragments out of the innards and second is to keep the hammer from being blown back to the half cock notch.

The neatest cap jam fixer thingy I ever saw was a hardened steel pin (probably a drill shank) inserted vertically in the frame right behind the capped nipple. A slot was cut into the striking face of the hammer to clear the vertical pin as it contacts the cap. The hammer face on each side of the slot busted the cap and the vertical pin kept the cap from blasting down into the innards..............Bob
45D does nice cap rake installations. Here is one I did from a jigsaw blade on my 1862 pocket police

How much deeper did you have to make the hammer notch? Just curious.
As others stated, deep enough to go over the rake and still able to fire the cap on the cone. I also installed an action shield and packed the action with grease. So far runs at 100%. I’m no gunsmith I’m just a hobbyist with machining experience and extensive experience with files, which is how I do my work along with hacksaws and coping saws and occasionally a dremel. If you don’t have that experience I would suggest seeking out the experts, who have just posted on this thread.
