Made a short starter and leather capper today

I was feeling crafty so I made these today. The antler is from a buck I shot last year. The other parts are a length of 3/8" poplar dowel, a short length of 3/8" brass rod, and a .38 Special case with the end turned down. All parts are glued and pinned together with brass pins I cut from brass rod.

The capper was made from a piece of scrap leather. The top right hole is to tie it to my shooting bag. The row of holes all have a slit going to the edge of the leather. It's sized for #11 caps.

Very nice! Good looking stuff! It is funny how we can find “traditional” uses for modern “suppositories.” I have found that the same size cartridge also makes a good @25gr of fffg powder measure for my .50 Kentucky pistol.

I agree, that is a well made short starter and capper. I used a lot of brass cases when making mine too. They work, in fact, just as well as anything you can buy. Mostly I ground the rim off the cases but not all. I'm another one who uses pins to keep them from moving. Cappers I've made for musket caps and #11 caps worked as well.
