I'm planning on taking a "modernized" trek later this week so in that spirit, I made up a test batch of hard-tack today.
The stuff seriously is like eating leather. It's very hard but also very tough and kind of chewy. I can't bite large peices off the crackers with my teeth. Instead, I have to break them into small peices and put them in my mouth, allow them to soften slightly, then chew. The taste isn't that bad but they were only baked about 8 hours ago, so I imagine that may change after months of storage.
Fortunately, I also made a full sized batch of Swedish hard tack, which is much better and much more edible. Don't know if it will last as long, but it also will be eaten within a week, so it won't really matter.

I found the recipes for both online just using google. For the regular hard tack I downsized a recipe for a full batch and used one cup of flour, one teaspoon of salt, and half a cup of water just made into a dough and rolled flat, then cut into squares and baked at 375 for about 15 minutes.
I'm glad I made such a small batch of it because although it doesn't taste terrible, it is freakin' tough!

That Hardtack can "bind" you up, like hardened cement in a rain pipe! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:
Hmmm. Maybe they should get some for out in the Gulf to plug that well.

I don't bake mine quite so long as called for as I do not "need" it to last for a long time, this way it is a bit easier to eat, I would have to find my note to see where I set the timer for a "quick batch" I am looking forward to trying the new stuff you gave us the link to, thanks.

This recipe is very similar to Sugar cookie. [add a little Vanilla]

With butter and buttermilk I would have to say they won’t last to long. But they sure are good! :v

i read the recipe and made some cut it to thick so it tasted like a buiscut with some sweetness pretty good actuly.
