I'm planning on taking a "modernized" trek later this week so in that spirit, I made up a test batch of hard-tack today.
The stuff seriously is like eating leather. It's very hard but also very tough and kind of chewy. I can't bite large peices off the crackers with my teeth. Instead, I have to break them into small peices and put them in my mouth, allow them to soften slightly, then chew. The taste isn't that bad but they were only baked about 8 hours ago, so I imagine that may change after months of storage.
Fortunately, I also made a full sized batch of Swedish hard tack, which is much better and much more edible. Don't know if it will last as long, but it also will be eaten within a week, so it won't really matter.
