Did it at our club's monthly Winchester/NRA Muzzleloader Qualification Match. My Son Andrew started things off with making the grade at his first attempt at the Rifle Distinguished Expert classification. Firing 13 shots at 100 yards off-hand with the best 10 counting for score, and then repeating this distance from the prone position netted him a 126x200 subtotal. Moving up to the 50 yard line and shooting his rifle off-hand he was able to score 71 additional points. Then for the final target, shooting from the sitting position he mustered another 77 points, giving him 9 more points than he needed (265x400 minimum) to make his first "leg" out of the required six that you need to earn the Distinguished Expert Rocker & Certificate with the program. I was able to watch his shots through my spotting scope, and give him some coaching, but he did all of the work, and man am I PROUD! That Lyman Trade Rifle of his didn't even hiccup...all 52 shots out the tube without a single problem! He used our usual 72 grain charge of 3Fg Goex, a .018 pre-lubed pillow-ticking patch and a .490 Hornady ball.

The icing on the cake was next to come: I used his charcoal blue 1860 Army revolver to shoot the Pistol portion of the match. The wind picked-up a bit, so my score at 50 yards (77x100) seemed a little low going into the 25 yard portion of the Qualifier. I would need to score an 88x100 in order to make the minimum 165x200 required for the Distinguished Expert classification. With Andrew watching through the spotting scope, my last shot nailed the 10-ring and I just made the 165 minimum, with my Son watching it all happen, which means that I only have to do it four more times to earn the classification of DX in Pistol. I used my 27 grain charge of 3Fg Goex, a pre-lubed wonder-wad and a .454 Hornady ball.

I lit a celebratory cigar for the ride home :) . It sure was a great way to end his Spring Break from college (he's a junior this year) with memories that are sure to last a lifetime! :) Man do I love shooting with him!

Outstanding :) I miss competitions like that... Mmmm have to look some stuff up :)

The info for the Qualification Program is located in the Youth section, it's not in with the national competition write-ups.

It's a great program for the adults as well, especially if you use the recommended B-19 targets! Very challenging!

Thanks guys!

Wish I had photos, but I forgot the camera again! I do have one on my desktop of the two of us with our rifles, but I'm too stupid to figure-out how to post it. I could email it to someone though, so they could post it for me??? Just a thought?

Thanks guys! It's a lot of hard work, and quite enjoyable when you make the required score! To do it with my son makes it all the more special!

Now if I can just get the wife to come and watch us "play" together! :haha:

And smo: I've just recently learned that physical ailments are taken into consideration in the Qualification Program. Those with bad backs can do more bench work (like our stroke victim example), so maybe you might get your club interested in doing this. If I can help you, just let me know!

Thanks Dusty!

Five or six sets of targets is a lot of work, so these little rockers and pins don't come cheap or easy, that's for sure!

He'll be home for Easter weekend, but Momma says we're going to Church on Sunday :nono: so no shootin this weekend!

Maybe I'll get out on Monday if I can find someone to watch me try again! DX shooting needs to be witnessed by a coach, instructor, league chair, or at the very least an NRA member. Hope it's still nice on Monday!
