I've rendered this years take yes. I have a few more jars setup I just didn't put them in the last pic. I'm thinkin when done I'll end up with twice the oil you see in the last pic.

very good post, I learned a lot by seeing the pics and reading the comments, I could almost smell it cooking.

Good T.O, the point of the thread is for people like you who have never done it or thought of doing it. To show its not a difficult thing to do and your time spent doing it is well rewarded.

Sounds like my older bear oil/beeswax mix. Is it kinda on the hard side but pliable when rubbed between two fingers or can you stick your finger in it with little effort?

It's very hard. I tried to push my finger into it but couldn't. That's at room temperature.

It say's "bear grease hunting blend 60/40".

Ok, wish I realized what he was shipping. You can heat it up and add half again that container of olive oil if you want, that should get you a very nice hunting lube for now.

Don't know about you but my chest seems to tighten up when I eat them.

I think that's why the bags aren't bigger than they are. :haha:

I was thinkin' a little BBQ rub sprinkled on while they're still hot.

Go to Sam's Club. They sell pork rinds in a big plastic barrel.

The oil so far,

So how much oil did you finally get with that batch of bear fat? and how many lbs of bear fat did you use? I think I might be getting some from an outfitter that does bear hunts up there in Maine. Trying to get about 20lbs.

I'm not totally sure what I actually started with, didn't weigh it all before starting. I guesstimated at 20 lbs, so somewhere between 15 and 20. Right now I have two half gallon jars and two 1 quart jars full of oil and that much still of lard that is still producing oil. I figure I'll probably end up with about 2 gallons of oil at least and somewhere between a gallon or two of lard when done.

Just in time for huntin season. I got lucky and found one last Skippy Peanut butter jar full of rendered deer tallow in the freezer that I had tucked away. I'll need to render a bunch more this year... Anyway this jar was enough for me to mix a few tubes of my Huntin lube up thats been promised to a few people.

I warmed the deer tallow and bear oil and mixed well my ratio into a half gallon jar and then poured the mix into 4 oz tubes and immediately placed them into the freezer to solidify.

And heres the tubes a day later, ready to go a long with 4 oz bottles of Bear oil.

Swampy,
Do you render the deer tallow the same way as the bear fat? Then do you end up with deer oil too? Or just hard lard, or what? I've never done it. The deer around here have a thick layer of fat most times. I should see what I could do with it.

I learned to put the fat through a grind before rendering, cuts rendering time down quite a bit. The tallow ends up almost like a white beeswax consistency. You need to heat it up to liquid form in order to mix the two when your ready. I had rendered so much back in 2007, I just used the last of it to make this batch. :haha:

Jethro, I noticed the above link for the how to render tutorial says to add salt. They are making soap, we aren't, so I'm sure I don't have to tell you not to do that.

 I wouldn't have added any salt but that's a good bit of advice.
Thanks for the info. I think I'll give it a whirl when I shoot my next fat doe.
