Making a backpack frame

A few yrs back there was a article in MB about a chippwa inverted u shape pack frame like the iceman'. But to me a few yrs could be 20 more or less. (I retired at 55 after 35yrs on the job if I stayed no increase in retirement and I still think it was just a bit ago)that just goes to show ya.
 
In the drawing posted it looks like a side hole in the top and bottom of each side through which a rope is run to lash things to the pack board. If that correct?
I always thought they would be idea for packing out a section of deer, etc- I've always dragged and that can get real tiring in a hurry, especially if you are in the "land of little sticks".
Where do you guys get really heavy canvas, the stuff at JoAnn fabric is pretty thin. I've looked around for a thickness used on Army type gear but haven't found a source.
