Making a Shooting Bag

I want to make a leather shooting bag. Does anyone know of any plans/drawings avaiable? Or do I need to start from scratch and design my own?

Either is a good path. There's a fowler pouch pattern here on the site, with pdf downloads for each piece. It's a dandy bag, but a little more complicated than a simple bag. Read and think it through before sewing. Check the craftsman section here too, especially back threads for more examples and links to patterns. Lots of example photos and good ideas. There are some great books out there too.

Two quick words of advice:

Numero uno, I made my first one from cut-up blue jeans, just to get a feel for the way things went together. Dirt easy and turned out a useful shoulder bag, PC or not, in a couple of hours.

Numero dos, figure on making several if the fever bites you, so don't be too hard on yourself if you get a ****oo here and there. Each one you make will be better than the last. I'd start with a cheap piece of "learning leather" to learn all possible mistakes, then go on to a good piece for the bag you really want.

Either way is fine. You can look online and see something you like. I've done that and then printed out a photo. You can then blow it up and make your own pattern!

I think your bag looks great. :bow: We are all our own worst critics. How did you weave the strap? I would like to learn how to do that. I am intrested in the pattern you used.

This a card woven strap. I used playing cards and a simple wooden frame to support the yarn. The piece of wood was just a 2x4 about 7 ft long. The only problem with this setup is the yarn gets really tight toward the end of the strap. Others with more experience would most likely have suggestions on how to overcome this problem. I have included the link for the pattern. I just the changed the colors. I used cotton yarn for the strap.

I found the TabletWeaver software from the same site really good for experimenting with colors. Just change the colors and see what it looks like. Ever better the software is free. I had to play with it for awhile to get the hang of using it. Here is the link for the software:

Brett Sr. did a good photo tutorial on card weaving. I found it very useful. I just checked and some of the picture are now missing, but it is worth looking at.
