Thanks for the advice! I was thinking Altoids tin or even the CCI tin's for making and storage. This is going to be another fun project for me and my daughter. :thumbsup:

Check through the previous message posts on the Craftsman part of this board - where they discuss "making" things. Charclothe has been discussed a number of times, and those older posts have lots of good info in them.

You might also want to jump over to the Canadian Library's online Northwest Journal site.

I have pretty good luck using old cotton bluejeans.I cut the squares and cook them in an altoid tin.Got to be 100% cotton tho,not the stretch jeans...( not stretching is why I'm burning em...) :wink:

Bubba Go to a fabric store and ask for Monk's cloth. All I will say is you will like it but be careful you could get burned.

My buddy got me some old shop towels from Three Mile Island they work good burn pretty hot. Heck for some reason they glow in the dark when I open my tin up :shocked2: :bull:

When I need some char while at home, I cut old cotton tee shirts into about 4 inch squares. Put them in a quart paint can with a small hole in the lid. I cook the cotten (outside) over a single burner propane stove. You'll need to keep the heat low. Like what was said before when the smoke has just about stopped take the can off the fire and let it cool. Don't over cook it. You can always put it back on the fire if it's not quite done. When done right you can tear into smaller squares if needed. Just my .02¢

I had heard dryer lint (cotton fibre) would work well not being charred. Not PC, but I caught some on fire the other day with a spark as a test and it worked well.

i'll say lint works great, my wife was just cleaning out the dryer when i happen to have the
flint and steel in my hand, i thought of this thread and told her to give me the lint, I put it on a cookie sheet on the tile counter and in 2 strikes i had a blaze, no wonder dryers are so dangerous if the lint builds up.

Seems to me if you could shread up those military
cleaning patches, that you can get in someplaces very cheap would make for good char.Not PC but
neither are my old t-shirts.
