How does it appear to have been held in the stock?
The straps are the only thing holding it down. There was some kind of resin used as bedding, but I'm sure it wouldn't have held it down. There are marks about 2" wide on the stock. I'm guessing it was leather straps.

No other visible mechanical way to hold the barrel down. No tang, wedge, pins, etc.

it is indeed an odd piece, and it may well indeed be an unknown RARE HOBBIT GIN? all kidding aside I for one would lice to have it, MOVIE PROP GUN or not.

I'me sure it long pre dates Films' I meant a theatrical piece, cultural stuff rather than meant for shooting going on the muzzle with that step of a reasess .Wont be bored just forge welded , unless at some time someone so hammered the muzzle as to create the constriction ? .Whatever their thinking. If they can write the alphabet on a grain of rice. Ime sure they had a plan.

This is made like the first matchlock muskets. No tang, breech forge welded closed. Just strapped into the stock with wire or rawhide bands. I think this is the real deal, barrel could be 100 years old or 400 years old, no way to tell.

Well unless its been in some temple its not got 400 years use on it, the hundred who knows but no vent wear still reckon its theatrical/ ritual ? . going on the muzzle state. Got us all talking anyway.
