The oldest know rifles were built on wheelocks, cr 1520.
Long range bench fired matchlocks are known from before 1600 with built in foots, and peep sights, could be some of these were rifled. And matches were held at three hundred yards

I've got two but just new, plenty of rifled ones the oft quoted Emperor Maximilians
'Rifle' may or might not be an intended' rifle ' the grouves indistinct I gather .
I've hunted days with a 54 cal rifled matchlock. The game doesn't know their obsolete anachronism's doesn't affect the taste of the meat .

@tenngun, if it's not a typo, please explain the word foots. I'm stumped. Thanks.
The stock had in the forearm a large block with a flat bottom about 8” square and as wide as the forestock to set on a bench

Sounds like a 1520 ancestor of the benchrest forearm rail adapter that smallbore shooters put on their unmentionable rifles.

Given the amount of experimentation in the time period, I would be very surprised if no one made a more military styled matchlock rifle, but I do not know of any survivors or references to them.

think he's referring to something like this. I've seen quite a few in European museums.
