With rain pouring yesterday and me looking for something to do, I decided to weight my 50 and 54 cal Maxi-Balls. I was amazed by the weight variation of up to 5 grains! Looks like I'll be weighing mine from now on and segregating them into their weight class for on target accuracy.

Five grains out of 370 is not too bad. They probably shot fine until you started weighing them! Now they will be all over the target. :haha:

That is a pretty small%! an you see any wrinkles ot fishers? If they are internal voils you may have a ptoblem. Did you buy them or cast them your self? Geo. T.

i normally allow for a couple grain variation. my recent batch of .570 balls weighed in at 276-280 with the average being around 277.5. so i decided to cull all the balls below 277 (i think maby 10 balls were culled out of over 100).

the heavier the projectile, the more variation you will see. when casting .490 balls the variation is just +/- 1 grain. but as you can see i allow for 3 grains with my .570 cause if i didnt i would cull too many to make it worth it.

No, bought them from Jeddiah Starr and Track of the Wolf. Yes, a few had wrinkles on the nose but not real bad.

No, I've been noticing unexplained flyers in my groups and wondered what was going on, now I know. I'll be testing some of these weighed bullets later this week for accuracy. I have been weighing my round balls and have seen an improvement in the groups I get now.
