My wife is always giving me grief for the mess on my bench. I'v gone to web sites and showed her the benches of other gunmakers and how messy they are. Is your bench messy? Sometimes i can't see the top for all the tools and wood chip.

Mine gets that way as I get near the completion of building a gun. Gets so bad it takes a long time to find anything. I have to clean it up perfectly before going to another project. Going to try to keep more picked up this time but it interferes with my rhythm.

The more bench top space you have in any shop, the messier it gets.
That's a rule :rotf:

"Is your bench messy?"

Not really, I've set it up so the tools have a place within arms reach and a couple of those plastic stack-up drawer things on wheels fit under the bench. I like to SEE what I'm doing.
The only time it gets messy is when I'm NOT working on something. That's when unfinished and planned projects start stacking up onit. The work bench becomes "storage"! :shake:

My benches are always neat and I try to keep every tool in it's place.

At times my bench get's overloaded and then the excess goes onto the large table. Either when something gets lost, can't find some tool or mainly when I get "fed up" w/ the unsightly mess, the bench and table are emptied and everything is put in it's place. Doesn't last long, though....Fred

Here's another rule:

You're not making any money if you are cleaning up.

I do clean it up when it gets out of hand. I sweep and pick up and put away when I'm on the phone which can be hours some days. When someone comes in and says, "wow, this place looks so clean" I smile to myself knowing that I've been on the phone all day.

Although some tools seem to be in a random pile I know where every one of them is and can lay hands on it as needed because it is a one-man shop. Problems occur when I have helpers who either leave tools where they were last used or (gasp) they put them away where they belong. Screws up my system. :rotf:

Ya mean there is a top to my bench?? :shocked2: Who new??

"A clean gun smithing workbench is a sign of a sick mind" or something like that :rotf:

I watched a gun building video of Hershel House. It was funny to see how much stuff was laying everywhere you looked. No horizontal surface was clutter free. Of course it didn't keep him from building a nice rifle. GW

YEP!!!!!

and my wife adds to it!!!! She says " I knew that was yours so I put it on your bench????" :surrender:

You guys are all kids. When you get my age if the tool is 12" out of place you can't find it or see it. I only work 3 or 4 hours a day. I can't afford to spend half my time searching for stuff.
Everytime I drop a piece of gold or silver I have to stop and sweep up the whole floor to find it. So my shop is clean and fire proof.

I try to be organized... really do, just not very good at it :haha: :v

I am still looking for the first silver front sight I made for the last project.
