We are similar in our thinking. I started with 35 grains in a .50 Lyman Deer Stalker that was cut down and fitted with a shotgun recoil pad. I actually was using a caplock at the time to get him started and let him shoot at playing cards stapled to stubs of 2X8 boards from a construction site. This accomplished a couple of things -- he shot at a small target; his attention was maintained by enjoying the success of knocking something over on almost every shoot and I could study his progress as he got closer to the center of the playing cards. Motivation of the young ones is important.
My son also has a T/C Seneca in .36, but I will build him a .40 and trade with him down the road.
