I happened across an older post about mink oil and mutton tallow in comparison to the tin of mink tallow from totw. I use the ready made stuff from totw, and it works really well, so I thought why not try a home brew. I went to blue ribbon products inc out of Indiana they sell 8oz of pure mink oil for $8.50 plus shipping (abt $12.00) I mixed 1/2 oz oil to 1 oz lamb tallow, all by weight put the mix in a container in warm water to blend it. It set up nicely but I think maybe a 1/4 oz more will give me the the stiffness like totw"s mix, it greases the patch nicely and seams to get into the fibers just by rubbing with thumb and finger pressure.
probably no savings but I just want to do a home brew, and will see if it shoots the same as the commercial made stuff.

I shot today and was pleased with the mix of mink oil and lamb tallow. One hi and one low right of the bull were very lightly coated with the mix. The low right side was a dry tallow patch. Two low left were pillow tick with just mink oil, I coated the next patch much like I did with TOTW mink tallow, and stayed in the bull with TOTW lube. The load was 85 grs. of 3f all shot at 100 yards bench rest .025 denim the dry tallow patches were .018 pillow tick, the .025 patches work great. So either way the .530 ball worked fantastic.

I have a couple of cans of boot dressing mink oil. Never tried using it for BP. I’m not very trusting of labels, who knows what your actually using. But if it works, great.
Haven't been shooting it long, but so far it has been keeping my barrel fouling soft enough to keep the barrel clean. It doesn't show any signs of fouling my powder charge once i get the barrel warm. And no signs of fouling my patent breech CVA. I've only been using it since the weather has turned cooler so I've yet to mix it with beeswax to firm it up. So far I'll take the results, as my grouping has tightened up.

I bought some TOW mink oil about a year ago and just shot it for the first time about a month ago. It shot about the same as TC Bore Butter and Wonder Lube do in my Lyman 54 GPR ball shooter. I am getting away from TC bore butter and wonder lube because of the negative posts on this forum. Shooting with Mink Oil the GPR did seem to clean up very easily. At some point I am going to try Peanut oil and olive oil just for kicks.

For a second there, I thought you said peanut “butter”…lol! I was gonna say, let me know how that goes. 😎

Well I tried the mix again today, good to go did as well as before, so buy it or make it to your specs. I did have a small surprise I ran out of goex and started using schutezen 3f. My group dropped by 1/2" but was still a good group, and it is noticeably dirtier. the fouling did get a bit chunkier and slightly more of it. Both not being big problems but worth mentioning. Still at 100 yds. like the man next to me said "that ain't so bad"!

I have a good supply of Schutezen that I bought when Goex went scarce. But I’ve never used any of it yet. Luckily still have plenty of Goex. I need to try some out soon.

Why do you worry what people say here? Use what works for you. Don't worry what little Bobby does. There are guys on here that use the damndest stuff.

I don't care what people say . However in this case I ask if people were having problems with Bore Butter and Wonder Lube and got some very interesting answers that seemed reasonable. Since I am always trying to make my experience better I took their advice . Besides I am always interested in learning new things and trying new ideas.

I could certainly get along fine with bore butter and I still have a good supply . I will probably burn it up one day.

Use what you got till you don't. Either while you have it or want to try something different. Muzzleloading supplies are difficult to come by here in winston salem, nc. Wally world had 1 tube of some type of bore goop, Academy had 2 tubes of some form. I wanted to try something I could readily get.
