After removing 20 + over the summer I still have two that are hanging out. They are scavenging apples off my tree. I don't mind that but I'm in the kitchen baking and just caught one on the patio ready to start chewing on a cushion. 😠 I'm ready to apply the final solution to these two. Was ready to tolerate them for the winter but they are wearing out their welcome.

When I post "no problem" it's finished. 😈
Don't put a hole in the deck Cruiser 🤣

We got some purty bad squirrels here in East Tennessee.

Good luck on your hunt, Fred.
Very cold this morning, I know 44° might not be cold up north, but with a good bit of humidity and 9-12 MPH winds it's bone chilling.
No late season deer for me. I'll be back out there Monday. I have until about mid January unless I drive up to the panhandle. Saw a buck and a doe. They were on opposite sides of a wet weather pond, at different times. They just popped in sight and back out of sight.

We saw some squirrels right at daylight, no more after the first hour of daylight. I haven't hunted this WMA in a few years. We did see a lot of empty hickory shells and half eaten oaks. So I'll be able to get some squirrels after general gun season.
It was still a good time in the woods plus finding a good squirrel area.

Ok I’m ready to see this thread get righted. I too have got a lot of enjoyment from it.

so I showed you guys the cool looking squirrel my friend had on his feeder. View attachment 370116He wanted me to come over and shoot it. I said you shoot it and I’ll mount it. He brought it over yesterday lol. He put a hole through his feeder but he didn’t care. Haha.

The black on her back appears to me like it’s the underfur showing minus the guard hair. Also, her one eye is damaged.

I’m going to mount her climbing down a branch to show the back off. Her underside is normal.
Thanks for posting, Jim.

That is one neat looking squirrel. I'm looking seeing it after ya get done with your mount. Like the idea of having her climbing down a branch.

Thanks again Jim. I hope hunting activitie picks up for ya on your next hunt.

Herbivores might be omnivores more than we think. Whitetails have been observed not only eating, but catching fish.

If those squirrels in the study were eating insects, they were already omnivores. I don't know if other squirrel types eat insects, but it wouldn't surprise me. They are smart and have the "tools" to catch and eat prey. Other rodents are omnivorous so why not squirrels?
Indeed, squirrels are listed as omnivorous. They have been seen eating baby birds, insects, eggs, etc. IMO, they would have to be mighty hungry to choose that over some type of crop nuts or tree buds.
My granddad always told us kids that squirrels will eat baby birds. I have never witnessed this. I remember seeing a documentary about some protected birds that nest on the ground. It was on an island supposedly no predators, but something was eating the baby birds at night.
They set up cameras and caught whitetails stomping the babies and eating them. Supplementing their protein.

That is one bad squirrel.
I'd like to have his knife.
I wonder if it's one of Two Feathers Roach Belly Knifes. 😉
To heck with the knife! I'd much rather have many of those type of squirrels in this neck of the woods to take care of all the copperheads and rattlesnakes. I'd go as far as to paint those snake-killing squirrels hunters orange just so I wouldn't accidently kill one of them.

Well, Fred. One thing is for sure. You can't kill them sitting home on the couch. Can't change the weather either.

At least you were able to get out there. Better luck next time.

I thought about going again today, but I'm going out back to the Slough. I'm letting Henry out now, the squirrels have been coming out right at daylight. If not He'll run although the area A scare them.
I'll go back to the WMA Monday.
Plus last time I went out back there was a small amount of hog activity.
It was nice to get out with Myrtle and hunt. She can't get out there as much as she used too.

We can't give up..

Ed. You have a good point. Let's just hope that they stick to killing snakes.

There was, back many many moons ago (possibly even in the dial up AOL days) a forum I was on that had a long running squirrel wars thread that got increasingly asinine and incredibly silly. I often wish I could find it again.

Trigger, sometimes I do hunt squirrel with my dog. It goes good.
Trigger It's fun for the both of us.
He's one heck of a squirrel dog. If he's barking under a tree ya bet your pay check there is a squirrel in that tree. If he's sitting there quietly and looking up scanning the tree tops and give you that look and starts quivering there's a squirrel in that tree.
He has treed more squirrels than than I shot, I believe he frustrated at me when I miss.🤔

I'm not a squirrel hunting dog trainer, or did I grow up hunting squirrels with a dog. Henry took to it on his own. We saved him from a not so good life. We took him to stop what was about to happen that night... Plan were to give him to my wife's friend. After have him for just shy of 2 weeks I saw some unique traits in the boy. Treeing squirrels was one of them. After seeing him do this in the backyard doing this, I took the little fella through the woods to the Slough area. He was a sniffing track fool. He treed a few squirrels in a short time. I was amazed. After a good walk together, we went back to the house. First thing I Sato my wife was,"Myrtle, have called Melody, about this dog?" She replied, "No, I sorry, I'll call her tomorrow." I said "Forget it, this dog is not going anywhere!" She smiled and "Oh, good I was hoping to keep him"

Now back to hunting squirrels with a Designer Breed??? What the H&&& is that? He is not a common squirrel hunting breed, Like a Mullins Feist, Cajun Squirrel Dog, Carolina Cur or Mountain Cur, He is an Aussie Doddle.
I belive he prefers Slough Dog 🐕 or just plan ol Mutt.

There are times he sits and holds them in place and others he'll move around the tree. Eyes never losing sight of the squirrel. Then it's up to me.

There are times I go out back and hunt squirrels solo There's been a few times I've shot a squirrel, watch it hit the ground. Keep my eyes on that spot, making my way through sometimes thick under growth. After reaching the spot I could not find the squirrel.
First time that happened I knew I hit the squirrel. Trusty Crockett Rifle. He crawled off, I looked and couldn't find him, I thought Henry will find him. Came home git the boy. Took him to the spot and his nose went to work. He found him about 10 to 12 feet away. The squirrel made his way to a cluster of vines right at the base. Crawled in there where I didn't see
I had a friend that had curs. went with him some.Had a great time but we covered a lot of ground. Every time I went I was wore out and very tired. But I had a great time.First time I went he handed me a couple water bottles. Told him I ain't its cold this morning. He laughed and said. You will need it. hahaha. I drank all my water before the hunt was over lol
him. Ole Henry found though.

Him and I, will make it out back this Sunday and give them @@@@.
I might try using my
CVA double barrel Brittany .410 loaded with #6 shot.

I really enjoy hunting squirrels with a muzzleloader and my 🐕 whether it be PRB or shotgun, or .58 Smoothbore.

Best to all, good luck if you are able to get out squirrel hunting this weekend.

It goes good when hunting squirrels with a dog. Henry is a good hunter and has taught me alot about hunting squirrels.

P.S.
Thanks for letting my know about the Brittany. Appreciate that Trigger.
Thanks.
A good dog is a good dog. No matter high dollar breed or one that adopts some humans. They can be hard to come by too!

Thanks. I think I missed some of the dog responses I meant to read.

Thank you.
