Mink oil melt?

Are you guy's heating up your mink oil to prelube some patches?

I was heating it up in the beginning. Now, I just smear the stuff on my patches right out of the can.

I used to 'french fry' my patches but now I just smear some on the barrel side of the patch. I noticed my rifle didn't like a whole lot of lube on the patch.

Im with Trench on this one. I used to melt it in but now straight out of the can. And I just use it during cold weather hunting. For warm weather shootin I use wonder lube stuff with good results :thumbsup:

Well, it looks like I'm alone as I melt mine. I just melt some in a small shallow pan over low heat then dip the patches using a pair of tweezers. Its a little time comsuming but it prevents over saturating the patch. But if ya'll are getting good groups by just smearing it on, I'll have to try some that way and see if there's any difference.

I too just smear it on but then I throw them in the micro wave for a few seconds

Is there a noticable change in accuracy between a light smear and a heavy smear of lube?

I have been using the dip method because I did not think I could get consistant amounts of lube by smearing.

I just cover it evenly, and I can't say whether it's heavy or light. Doesn't seem to matter if the coverage is even.

I heat up the leather too, but not too hot or you damage the leather you are trying to protect.

My PA Hunter does not like lots of lube on the patch. I found this out when I ran out of my usual french fried or dipped patches and just used spit. Next time I used the smear just a little on the bore side and it groups great and low fouling as well. I do swab every shot though.

I can shoot long strings without swabbing with Hoppes #9 though.

For my 54 cal, I melt mink oil and soak larger 58 cal wool felt wads in the melted oil. I set the wads out on a sheet of paper towel to soak up the excess hot oil while they cool down and solidify.

My .018" patches get saturated in a 7:1 water:Ballistol mix the set aside to dry for a couple of days.

I also wipe between shots with a patch barely dampened with Butch's Black Powder Bore Shine.

This system has been working out real well for tightening up my shot grouping. The balls I shoot are .535".

Also, Loyalist Dave - you lost me completely. What leather are you talking about protecting from heat with melted mink oil???????
