With as much misinformation that is out there (and even on this website), I'd thought I'd post information that answered the question. If they already knew, nothing would be lost, but someone else might not know...

Also, the information I found indicated that commercial Mink farming didn't start until the 1860's, further supporting my statement that Mink oil/grease would not be a PC lube for the F&I, Revolutionary War and Fur Trade periods.

In this long thread that went down a few rabbit holes, one of the folks raised the question of whether mink oil was PC. I doubt it but they did use various animal fats, oils, tallow, etc. and would add such things as bees wax as a thickener. If you want to be PC, the cheapest way is to simply buy a pound of plain old lard (rendered pig fat) at the grocery store and mix a portion of it with enough bees wax to make a PC lube of the viscosity that you need.

I have been applying the mink's oil to my upper lip each night before bed so I can smell it all night. It truly does smell like chicken's gravy!

I tried that once but my wife kept waking me up telling me she had this sudden and inexplicable desire for a fur coat after kissing me good night.

Wouldn't be PC??? An old longhunter man (Mr. Claude Shoulders) would catch mink and squeeze enough oil outta them to last through the season. :2

I can't tell if you are serious or not. I certainly hope you are being funny....

+1

As previously discussed, the minks are not "squeezed" and released to harvest their oil... they are however, slaughtered, butchered, and rendered down. :shocked2:

That being that, this week I'm going to hit the local fabric shop to get some ticking and cotton drill to make my own patches. Now about a patch punch...

:hmm: Serious or funny...? Lots of people don't know about such as that. When I was in HS the running joke - that tricked the Principal into announcing it over the intercom. "Whomever borrowed my copy of 'Tiger's Revenge' by Claude Balls (or Butts); please return it to me". Claude Shoulders was a relative of his, I believe. :idunno:

I think we should get back to the subject of Mink Oil before I get tempted to start with the "Little Moron" jokes that are not only dumb but are no longer "sensitive of others feelings".
