Thanks! One person said cow's kidney fat works well as it is stiff.
I prefer something that is a little less like candle wax and more like Crisco in consistency. Deer tallow is stiff and I don't use it for patching but it works well for pre-made shot loads (don't need to change shape as they are bore-sized).

Enjoy the "big Lead BOX"
I wish I could say it mattered to me at all, but it really doesn't. You could have gone on your merry way, but had to make a show of it. Bye... :idunno:

If you were transported back to the 1760's you'd find a lot of bear grease and bear oil being used. I'd use it if I could get it.

I'd further bet that they often had several fats/oils to choose from, and therefore used what they liked best. Narrowed down to one, say pork or beef, they'd just use that till something else came along.

I'm blessed with a good supply of bear, as well as a small remainder of a blend Stumpy made with bear (other ingredients unknown by me). It's dandy stuff alright, and easy to understand why they liked it. It's hard to make the oil "behave" and stay in whatever container you use. Hard to imagine guys back in the day coming up with something that stoppered well enough to keep the oil from leaking out. I sure have trouble doing it with modern containers! Leads me to use prelubed patches when using bear oil, though I prefer to lube at the muzzle with greases.

The personal metric I use is:
If I were to be transported back to 1760 - would I look out of place?
I have come a long way and feel I can continue to improve...

Google "game processors" in your state...You'll find one that process harvested bears..
Give them a call and have them fill a 5 gallon pail with bear fat....Then get to work....

Bear oil will be in your future...You can get some fat iffin you want.

The OP is looking for a traditional lube. Mink oil really isn't...

Correct.
Minks weren't invented until about 1930. :shocked2: :rotf:
