I've seen restorations by gunsmiths such as David Chicoine where a gun that appeared to be in relic state was restored to like new.

How is this done? It seem like so much metal would have to be removed that the actual dimensions of the gun would be reduced. Is metal added via some welding or electroplating process or something?

I'm wondering because I have a gun that got deeply pitted in one area (I think BBQ sauce got on it lol) and I wonder if a restoration would change the shape of the gun.
 
LOL, that is certainly true.

The gun I have just has one small area that is badly pitted, about 1/4” area. I’m concerned a restoration will change the contours of the gun.
