Miss. deer hunting seasons set

It's official: Mississippi deer hunters will have a November primitive weapon season this year.
As expected, the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks in a special phone-based meeting today gave final approval to a plan that will allow primitive weapons from Nov. 8-Nov. 19, for antlerless deer only. The same public notice creates a special archery season that will coincide with all gun seasons.
The action was the final domino to fall in a process that began in late June when Attorney General Jim Hood’s office issued an opinion that state wildlife officials lacked the power to allow archery equipment during gun seasons, which are set by the legislature. Without action, the opinion would have technically taken bows out of the hands of archery hunters from Nov. 20-Jan. 19 this fall and winter.
In the same opinion, however, it was suggested the agency did have the power to open special archery and primitive weapons seasons under certain situations, including controlling deer populations.
The Commission announced June 28 a plan to create the special archery season to keep bows legal for exactly that purpose statewide, but also added the early primitive weapon season in a period of time traditionally reserved for bow-only hunting.
Members of the Mississippi Bowhunters Association attended Monday’s tele-conference and urged commissioners not to let this be a first step in moving guns further into archery season.
“We’re concerned that this is just the first move that could lead to taking more time away from our bow-only season,” said Max Thomas, the archery lobby’s legislative liaison. “We will go to the legislature next year and try to have the verbiage put into law that allows bows in gun season, which has always been accepted as legal.”
Larry Castle, chief of game for the state wildlife agency, said Monday no discussions of further incursion into the archery season have been held.
“No, none at all,” Castle said. “We are not looking at having guns earlier.”
Castle said the agency is unlikely to include any deer season changes in its 2011 legislative package.
“I do not foresee us including any, no,” he said.
Castle clarified it, saying he “expects that to come from legislators.”
