Well the weather had cooled off somewhat and we finally had enough rain the fire danger is lessened. So this morning I headed to the range to do some shooting. As I ran a dry patch down the barrel to clean it before loading (practice I always do), imagine my surprise to find the patch totally caked with RUST. Last time I shoot I had cleaned the rifle very good and since I knew I would not be shooting for sometime I literally soaked the barrel inside with gun oil (Hopes no. 9). So I was very shocked, I have several times left a cleaned and lubed rifle in my gun safe for a couple of months and had never experienced such a mess. In the past I always cleaned with TC No.13 and lubed with TC Bore Butter. After I got the barrel cleand out (about 2-3 hours) I could run a patch down the barrel and did not feel any roughness, so I think I escaped the dreaded pitting. I did the final clean using TC #13 and after several dry patched and letting it dry good, I lubed with TC BB. I then decided to check all of my MLs. The ones I had lubed with gun oil ALL exhibited the rust, the ones that had been put away and stored LONGER after lubing with the yellow BB, had no rust. I will be going back to my tried and true cleaning and storing procedure. The gun oil just did not work for me. My experience, your mileage may vary.
