Is that stuff around in decent quantities for purchase? If so, how much does it cost? I want to have a jacket made, and moose hunting in MN hasn't happened in forever, and may not ever again. Drawing a tag in any state other than Alaska is nigh on impossible too. That's mighty expensive leather!

If you know someone in Newfoundland, you can get moose hides for free, all you want. raw, untanned. they throw them away. something about that it makes crappy leather or something. so my inlaws say.....i don`t think i believe them. when i go for my first moose i`ll be trying a vegetable tan.
where to get moose leather, i don`t know.

I think you will find Moose hide too thick for a coat unless you have it thinned considerably. On the other hand, Moose hide is excellent for moccasins - wears like iron.

Moose hunting season, there is a local butcher that has hides,,he cuts them up and sells the hides to Lobster Fisherman for bait.

I have an Alaskan moose hide and yes way to heavy or thick for coat.

I think if you have it shaved to maybe 6 oz. thickness (3/32") it would be ok. If you left it a full 1/4" thick it would be too stiff and heavy. You'd have to be a moose yourself to wear it full thickness.

Try Moscow Hide and Fur Company. They usually have some. Also might watch eBay. I see hides listed there at times. JMHO, Elk makes a much nicer leather for a coat.

I get email notices about moose hides from eBay every few days. So far, all I've seen are finished articles like embroidered gauntlets made by Metis artisans.

I do quite a bit of leather work and I can tell you from experience that anything over 4 oz. thickness for a jacket will be very, very heavy. I made a full length caped longhunter coat out of 4 oz. buffalo leather and that thing weighs a ton! I keep warm wearing it just because it's a workout walking around.
