Well, I guess the deer don't follow any of the rules! :haha: I've also had them within 5 yards of me on the ground and directly under my treestand. In fact, last year a buck was sniffing the cable lock I left coiled up at the base of the tree I climbed! Then again, I've seen them spook with absolutely no noise or movement (at least on my part). I'm glad they're not predictable, though - that's what makes it so much fun!

Deer are a prey species, They live by spooking soon and spooking often. It doesn't have to be any noise you make. It can be the dropping of a dead branch in a tree 30 yds away where you can't see or hear it. Or it can be a mouse scurrying in the leave at the deer's feet! I have seen deer in quiet pastures jump up in the air for no reason at all, that I could see frm the edge- They rarely run very far. If they are spooked by a hunter or something big like a dog, or coyote, you will know it because that is when the after burners come on and they put trees and hills between themselves and the perceived danger before stopping to turn around and check to see and hear if they are being chased. If not, they will often resume grazing, or even simply lay down. They may not be predictable to us, but that is only because we don't have their sense of smell, and their acute hearing, and, of course, we don't know what their feet are telling them, either.

Sitting in my climber stand down in the river bottom one morning, I watched a big buck stealth by about 30 yards to my left. Unfortunately for me, having seen nothing but turkeys from this stand for the previous several days, that morning I left the Kodiak .58 in camp and took the 10 ga.loaded with #5s :shake: Anyways, he came out in front of me about 60 yards away and stopped...BROADSIDE, stood for a few moments and suddenly bolted off. Figure he winded me. But a few minutes later he materialized again in about the same spot and stopped BROADSIDE, facing the opposite direction this time, then ambled off. "You've got to be kidding," I said to myself as it was the biggest buck I'd seen in 10 years of hunting this area. But you're right, they do sometimes jump or bolt for no apparent reason.
