Success! The triggers are in and functional. It's starting to look like a rifle.

Today I went to Jeff's shop to work on the butt plate. The first step was to mark the lines. Using a board as a guide we marked the inside line with a pencil.

Then cut it out on the bandsaw.

Here we're lining it up with the cast off marks.

And now the work begins...

We made quite a bit of progress today. I will finish the rest of the inletting in my shop. Not a very exciting post but it's an important and tricky part of the process. More to come. Thanks for looking.

Yesterday we finished fitting the butt plate. With some final inletting we were satisfied with the fit. Next we drilled the holes for the screws and installed it. What might seem like an easy task of drilling two holes and turning a couple of screws in is actually a little more tricky than one might think. If the holes in the wood are not aligned just right the screw will pull the butt plate off center. Most people would probably think two guys spending an hour drilling two holes must have a couple of screws loose!

Making final adjustments to close the gaps. I used a piece of paper to check all around the edges for tiny gaps.

We used the golden mean standard 3/5 to mark the hole and punch it. On the drill press holding it with a block of wood we drilled a starter hole then drilled the clearance hole.

This part is tricky. There is a gap between the metal and the wood so getting a true center mark is crucial. We marked it slightly north of center so the screw will pull the butt plate tightly against the stock.

I didn't take a picture but we drilled the hole with the butt plate off using a cordless drill. Install the screw while you hold your breath. This one worked out great. A nice tight fit!

Next we marked the bottom hole making sure it is high enough that we won't risk chipping out a chunk of wood from the toe. Punch the mark, drill a starter hole, drill the clearance hole on the drill press.

Here I am drilling the hole in the wood for the screw slightly angling it down so the screw will pull the butt plate tight against the stock.

We installed the screw to check the fit, all was good. Counter sink the holes, install the screws done!
