This is sort of a poll. There are a lot of conicals available and you could spend a small fortune in money and time testing all the loads. What are some of your favorite loads? That is type of conical, wad or no wad, type powder and charge, and barrel twist?

My .53 Santa Fe has a 66" twist, and the only ones I have had good luck with is the Hornady Great Plains 380 gr bullet over 100 grains of Goex FFg. They are a bit tight going in due to the tight bore, but they sure do cut a wicked hole when they strike meat. They are too expensive to use for target practice, but they seem to be dead on at 80 yards in my rifle.

50 cal CVA deerslayer over wonderwad & 60 grns Goex FFg; mostly because that load hits the same spot as a prb at 50 and 100 yards. 28 inch barrel, 1 in 48 twist.

I have had good accuracy with those Buffalo Ball-ets.They are shorter than many of the conicals and shoot pretty well in some of my rifles.Ya sometimes have to try a variety to find what works best for your rifle.

I prefer Minie balls in my 58 and R.E.A.L.'s in my .50 I have a mold that makes solid base hollow points with three grease grooves but I don't remember what they called it. It works well but the Real is better.

Aside from the fact that no two guns like the same bullet the same way:

In most 1/48 .45s I've found the 200gr REAL to be the best.

In my Mossberg .50 ML barrel, which is either 1/28 or 1/48, don't remember, the .320 REAL or .360 LEE Traditional Minnie seem about equally good.

My Firestorm likes the .250 REAL & the .360 Minnie about the same.

Never had much luck with any maxiball in anything.

I think that .50cal conical that you're talking about is a Thompson Center Mould for the Maxi Hunter. It has hollow point and I think 3 grease grooves and weighs about 350gr.

The R.E.A.L. conicals, IF they work well, are my first choice, as they are typicall cheap and easy to make. I do wish LEE would offer them in .32 cal, .36 cal, and .40cal. though... to give the small bore shooters a little more versatility.

I did like the old 600gr heavy skirt Minie (Lyman used to make the mould) as these worked well in a CVA .58 I used to have. It was almost impossible to blow through the skirt, and did they ever kick!

Regards, and safe shooting!

You may be right about the maxi ball. I've had the mold so long I don't remember. Was thinking it was a Lee mold but it doesn't say.

I've had great luck with both the 250gr & 320gr LEE REAL bullets in my 50cal TC New Englander with a 1/48 twist. I use 60gr to 70gr of 3f black powder for target shooting and 90gr for hunting.
They also shoot well with 90gr in my TC Pennsylvania Hunter with the 1/66 twist.
