Hey fellers, while perusing the idiot tube the other night, I saw a new series about a modern day mountain man is coming on Sundays at 9:00 est starting the 31st. Don't know if it'll be any good, but it looks like it will Bear Grylls and Dual Survivors :shake: ...Bud

At first I thought this was going to be about the book series by William W. Johnstone.

From what I've seen, it really has little to do with Mountain men as we know them. They might live a bit primitive but I saw them using modern guns to hunt with. :idunno:

I read a little blurb on the history channel website. Looks like another reality show about living off the grid on their own terms. They'll probably be the next swamp people or american pickers.

I saw the show last night and didn't think much of it. Modern day familys living off the grid. Sure they chose and live a tough life but not near what the true mountain man had. They all have trucks and modern rifles. It is just another reallity show on the history channel. Wish they would stick to the history stuff.

It was slightly more interesting than Ice Road Truckers and Loggers is about all I can say which aren't interesting at all.It has nothing to do with "history" like most of the programming on HC anymore.

I agree (NO HISTORY) the one guy has 10 people with him Iam sure paying for the(PRIVILEGE) of working his place, and doing the little BS things he dos't feel he has time to do. and you know darn well of the cameras were not there that bear would be a rug :stir:
Have Fun

:haha: The one with those people working(?) for him in NC was real entertaining.A friend and I were laughing about it discussing the show afterwards, that's pretty much how our grandparents lived.I think it's like he said, those shows are for people who think milk comes from stores.

First let me say, sorry y'all didn't like the series.
Now, that being said I didn't know exactly how it was going to be portrayed. But, it seems to me that back in the day I realize that true mountain men used whatever they had handy and I'm sure if they had and and could afford a 30.06 and a pick up they'd a had one (if there were passable roads).
Secondly, the fellow in NC does have a group of people that changes from time to time. Sure some of them pay, but he also takes in hard to handle folks to try and teach them what true work is all about and to live a better and cleaner life. He's been living that way for quite some time and it's my belief that he's trying to preserve a way of life not reenact one, like most of the folks on here.
These people in this series are living a lifestyle like most of us would like to live and are in my opinion mountain men in the fact that they don't depend on a whole lot of modern amenities, and don't forget this is the 21st century, not the 19th...Bud :v

Watched it an will not be watching agian. To me its just another swamp men, axe men, pawn stars an so on. :idunno: But to each there on

got about 5 mins into it and it was jsut a survivor type show realy not worth trying it again
20 years ago i lived off grid and hit miss engine on a generator/well
now i did pretty much live alone then but i still came to town to work and get my grocery's and staples
All i can say is after that first hard winter i was glad i had saved enouf to move back to town

I think Nifeman is on target.
Some further detail: Though I didn't see the intros, I have reason to believe that Eustace is actually Eustace Conway, the central chararacter in Elizabeth Gilbert's best selling cultural biography, 'The Last American Man', which you ought to read -if you haven't yet. He's been on the same path since adolescence, with little recognition and less notoriety. 'Turtle Island', the N C mountain preserve he's been struggling [for years] to buy, and keep, is dedicated to the purposes accurately cited by Nifeman. This guy is for real. The anecdotes about 'drinking horse piss and eating wolf pups'[Lamour] apply here, in spades!
I'll be watching, if for no other reason than to see where fate has delivered this bona fide original.
Read the book
