Wonder if anybody knows where a mouthpiece coul be gotten to make a horn into a hunters horn. Ones I've seen have a mouthpiece something like a trumpet.

You can make a mouthpiece if you have access to a lathe. most trumpet, or french horn mouth pieces weigh too much to be used in a buffalo or cow's horn. use either wood. or the tip of another horn.

The ones we have in these parts are carved into the horn itself. The sound blown from a 12" horn can be heard a 1/2 mile away on flat ground

The "dog horns" around here had the mouth piece carved into the horn. I'll try to find one and get a pic for you.

You could maybe find something useful in the junk drawer like a brass nozzle or something. I used to collect brass airline couplers and brass that would be trown away at work. I have an odd looking large black fossil crinoid stem that is flattened as if put into a vise that would make a cool mouthpiece for something. Its not flared on the end though. You could make one of bone the old time way with a simple handmade bow lathe.

The is a brass component on old lamps that is flared like this and looks turned. With a little work maybe that would be of use. You could thread the narrow end and drill the wide end with a tapered drill bit. Just a thought. It would be just the tip but if the flare is what you are looking for it might work.

Would like to see a pic. I like the idea of carving it in. Wonder what size hole is appropriate?

It seems the cut is made with a 45 degree bit of some kind and not cupped at all like a trumpet mouth piece. The hole/mouth piece is 3/4" wide and measures 1/2" deep,I can just fit a 1/4"drill bit in what would be the "throat" to the main horn.

This thing is LOUD!! If ya have the proper lips for it,,I mean ya gotta know how to blow a horn. High School brass band lesson would help. I used it to becken the boy back ta camp fer supper. I've had others I've traded that had a cup shape too'm, but I like the tone I can get with this one. It's 14" from tip to tip.

Necchi, thanks for that pic.

Looks like something that even I can do. Have two matched horns (same cow) that are just not "right" for powder horns but would look like they would make great "horns".
