Well, my 1st BP long gun arrived yesterday - a Traditions Crocket (.32). Got it from Midsouth, where they were about $50 under what it would have cost me locally, so I got all the stuff to go with it for about the same price. I have a .36 colt navy, but this will be my first time shooting a black powder rifle. I chose this one mostly based on the glowing reviews posted on this forum by owners of Crocketts - I figured if there are that many people who like them, they must be pretty good guns.

I did notice that Traditions' "Universal" nipple wrench is anything but. I saw where somebody on this board had the same problem and said that Traditions took care of them. I'll give them a call today & see if they can't get me one that'll fit.

I ran some cleaning patches through it last night and didn't see any signs of tearing, so I'm not sure about lapping/steel wool just yet. I'll probably get it to the range in the next couple of days and then see how things look.

I don't know how it'll shoot, but dang it's a pretty gun!

I suggest you don't lap the barrel. IMHO, you lap a barrel when you have problems & it is the last resort, but not a starting point.. You got all kinds of time to lap it IF it is necessary.

Shoot the barrel in..... It is safer for the barrel, you will learn the rifle & it quirks & do much better. The Crockett is a great lil rifle & shoots great right out of the box. Go have some fun with it !

20 grains of Swiss 3F with a .310 ball & ,015 pillow ticking or Oxjoke patch & Lehigh Lube = under 1" groups at 25 yards right out of the box.

25 grains of Goex 3F with a .310 ball & .015 pillow ticking or Oxjoke patch & Lehigh Lube = under 1" groups at 25 yds.

Great lil rifle. Great lil rifle for kids or wife or girlfriend to learn with. (Note: best NOT to teach wife & girlfriend at the same time...) :shake:

You don't need to lap the bore, you haven't even shot it yet to see if it has a problem. You need to shoot at least 500 rounds through it before you make any corrections. Most rifles will cut patches for the first 200 rounds. Then things to calm down a bit.

Thanks for the load data, Birddog. That sounds like a pretty good place to start. As for lapping, rest assured I won't do it until I'm pretty sure I have to. I get sort of nervous about doing that sort of thing.

Rayb-yep, when I do shoot it's down at Rustic Range in Slaton. Pretty decent place to go. Just wish it was a little bit closer to Lubbock, though. I'm hoping to find somebody right around who has a few more rabbits or prairie dogs than they need.
