Ordered a 50 caliber tool from Mr. Wood, who is very pleasant and helpful.

It was delivered this past Saturday and by Monday afternoon I was able to cone two of my barrels. It is nice not to need to carry a leather mallet or short starter any longer.

FYI, here's a group I shot last weekend offhand @ 30-yards to win the smallest group contest. In the highest score contest all my shots were in the X-ring in the bullseye. Never missed all day, also went 15 for 15 on the woodswalk with novelty targets out to 80-yards, having used the Joe Wood tool on my 50-cal left-handed Issac Haines flint longrifle.

Yes ... coning doesn't hurt accuracy ...

It does not take long! I found that out when I coned my 62 caliber.

I find the process goes better by sticking a ball of cotton ball an inch below the bottom end of the tool. After a few turns, I remove the tool and clean the bore to that point, swipe off the tool with the brush side of a file 'card', and put a drop of oil on the lower pilot.

For 30 years these precision made tools have been the preferred way to cone the muzzles of roundball guns either rifled or smoothbore. Greatly eases starting the ball and the long cone allows the ball to be gently swaged into the bore without damage. I believe accuracy is unchanged. There are many guns that have been coned with this tool and I have never had anyone comment that the gun shot worse. Due to the long cone and close tolerances each caliber requires a specific tool. Most common calibers from .32 to .62 on hand. I can also make tools for unusual calibers.

Here is a 10 shot 50 yard target I shot from a coned barrel and old time hunting sights using a rest back when I had much better eyes. Rifle is a flintlock JP Beck style with a .50 caliber Getz barrel. The X ring is 1 1/4” across. The score was 100, 7X.View attachment 30614

Joe, I used your tool on 2 of my .54 cal. guns and worked like a charm, thank you for a great product. They shoot good too!

Both the .45 and .50 flintlocks have been coned now. Starting the balls is nice and easy, no short starter needed. And accuracy is right where it was before. Thank you, Joe!

same here, it was easy to do, only took me about 1 hour to do the job. i had a much more enjoyable time shooting last weekend with my modded barrel. And one less tool to carry in the field, bye bye starter tool!

I received my coning tool today. It's very nicely made and Joe's instructions are clear. He even included a template for cutting out the pieces of wet/dry sandpaper. I hope to cone a barrel tomorrow.

It's very easy. Just take your time. My short starter is no longer needed for my. 62.

I first made contact with Mr. Wood on October 16th. The gentleman was on vacation at the time and still made the effort to return my call.

Upon the conclusion of his vacation Mr. Wood was extremely expedient in fulfilling my request for one of his coning tools and shipped it immediately. The tool arrived in short order, in excellent condition, along with clear concise and easy to understand instructions for the proper use of the tool. Mr. Wood was even kind enough to include a handy stencil that made cutting the abrasives to the correct shape and dimensions a breeze.

The tool functioned exactly as promised and is a welcome addition to my collection of tools. My short starter, on the other hand, now lives in my range box and no longer in my possible bag.
