I have noticed both on contemporary and antique guns decoration in the form of stamping on the muzzles of many long rifles, I would like to see examples of this type of decoration, so I can employ it in the rifle I am building.

I have one that has a bizarre decoration at the muzzle. Looks a bit like a star burst with the bore in the center. I'll post a picture when I can. I have seen a few with small indexing type marks on the muzzle always the same as the number of grooves.

I don't have one with decoration on the actual muzzle, but on a little .30 there are decorations on the top flat at the muzzle, around the rear sight and at the breech. Not what you asked for, but another approach.

Don't have pics, but saw in a book on the Appalachian mountain rifles where one maker cut concentric rings in the muzzle, they served no purpose except maybe as a trademark.

I went on a road trip today, sorry I haven't commented as of yet, but those are neat photo's
They really have inspired me to try harder with my engraving, I hope there are more pictures. But I really appreciate what you've given me.

Jack, I just got a new engraving book by John Schippers, and there's photo's in there of several with stars, punch marks, and small circle stamps around the bore. Can't copy it, it's copyrighted.

One thing I will ask which seems obvious to me is the grooves of this barrel. They seem that they were filed to a sharp Vee. Does this impair accuracy at all?

Jack

Lots of way of doing them, some fancy & some just accent it a tad.

This was done with hand gravers & files.

These were done with a lil cutting tool & a center punch.
