Most people I know don't get up in the morning and call state and federal authorities with their itinerary for the day and asking if its legally acceptable.

Dude;
Airplane, Gun, Not Cased,, 2023.
The 71yr old today, was 49 when 911 happened.
It's advisable to come out from underneath the rock, too look around outside every so often.
Try it,,
A Ground Hog does it every year,,

i have traveled many times with a firearm checked and declared. really not that tough.
flew out of Ontario Commiefornia once wit a matched pair of Ruger Blackhawks. Declared them to the check in gal from Southwest.
i had to show her they were unloaded. soon I had 4 or 5 other SWA employees ogling my revolvers. stainless with ivory grips and 100% engraved. they all thought they were works of art.
Another time flying from Burbank i was taken to a room and strip searched over some Zwickey broadheads i forgot in the bottom of my briefcase. was let go with a warning when the head inquisitor turned out to be an academy mate from the 70's. they did make me go chase down my checked luggage and put the deadly blades in the hold.

How does anyone know all the rules, there are almost 40,00 at last count! Maybe the guy believes in,

and figures he's covered. Some of us still believe we are innocent until proven otherwise and didn't figure on legislators, sworn to the constitution, enacting unconstitutional laws making felons of people who have committed no wrong's and are living their life the way their fathers, grandfathers, and on down the line did. Most of us on this forum are big 2A guys. And as SCOTUS found one can’t just name everywhere a sensitive place.
But even in my most ‘liberal’ view that the only gun control we need is hand on gun and gun handled safely, there are flight rules.
And failure to declare in this story is a red flag. If he was just ignorant of transport rules he wouldn’t keep it secret
TSA can now arrest you for a jar of peanut butter, he had to know they would flag a gun

Been a decade or more since I have flown. When I did take a gun it was in a locked hard case checked with baggage. Made me uneasy, especially if there was a layover / plane change involved. But did not have a problem.
Of course, that was then and this is now.

Making old fellas jump through hoops ,,cvant even buy a hunting license without internet ********..and registering/filling out forms ..being examined /scanned reading a 2000 pge list of rules and then no,one to help you understand..GEEES DONT GET OLD..THEY HATE YOU

Yeah, I hate it when the cops roll up on me with their violins and obos and sh!t. B!cth, this ain't Carnegie Hall, this is an Arby's!

Real happy to not be flying any more. The airline industry itself was going badly downhill, the war against Pearl Harbor like events brought forth der hemdenblau, Chertoff and Soros made lots of money on the body scanners...
My disgust knew no bounds. Retired at the right time.

WHEN ITS YOUR TURN you,ll understand ..not any symphony and common sense ..JAIL.

It ain't that hard. i'm 84.

BTW: The NRA has been warning folks for years, don't get caught at JFK, Newark or Laguardia airports with a firearm. i had read about a guy whose flight was diverted to Newark; he claimed his bag that contained the gun. Passenger was caught with a gun in his luggage while boarding the next day. Cost him over $20,000 for a firearms lawyer.

About 15 years ago my flight to a jobsite in Maine got diverted. My model 27 S&W was in the baggage, and i did not claim same.

This isn't a very sympathetic reply but...
There is a diference between the government encroaching on your rights, as opposed to a business imposing rules. A business that you don't have to patronize. The rules for transporting firearms and the airlines can decide what they consider a firearm, are available to anyone. He should have taken the time to read those rules. 3ven if those rules cole from the FAA, it still applies. There are rules for shipping guns, and buying guns. Ignoring the rules because you don't like them doesn't fix anything.

Carelessness or stupidity with our rights simply gives the other side more.ammo to encroach.

All firearms are checked…ALL
This instance might be best for society…
Not only are all firearms checked, but that extends to all ajr guns as well including pellet and BB guns. In addition the declaration rule also includes airsoft and paintball guns. Basically if it shoots a projectile and you are taking it on a plane it needs to be declared and in a sturdy lockable case.

In this day and age anyone who gets on a plane to anywhere and is taking any sort of firearm with them needs to check out the rules of travel and transportation carefully before going to the airport.

If someone is dumb enough to take a flintlock like that, stuff it in a bag, and take it on a plane without telling anyone, he IS the problem. Geez what if he decided to throw a couple of cans of black powder in the bag along with the gun!!??

Lousy packaging job, the law states firearms must be declared and empty of ammunition
If a decent muzzleloading, rifle he should want to take better care of it, law not withstanding
And the Second does not apply to the TSA or the airlines, they have their own rules Kind of like driving is a privilege', not a right

Heh. I caused a bit of a kerfuffle at SEATAC when I checked in a large rifle case I'd bought from Cabela's. Homeland Security were looking all over the place for me because when they checked the case they found it unlocked, and empty. It was empty to start with, mind, but they were concerned someone had half-inched a rifle in the airport. Apparently they prefer empty baggage to be locked regardless.

Irony, an art lost.
Robby
I should have said, Irony, an art applied, seldom discovered.
I'm thinking I should get rid of all my firearms, bullets, and even targets, so the anti gun people have no ammo to use against me.
Robby

Technically not a firearm !
Except that it is. Semantic arguments are generally just ******** trying to sea lawyer a way around an idea you don’t like. States might not consider them firearms for purposes of background checks but TSA has different interpretations as do airlines. Hell, you can’t hardly travel with a compressed air match pistol unless you can prove the reservoir is empty. Not because it’s a firearm, but because you cannot check or carry on any compressed gases. Rules is rules, don’t like it, drive or buy your own plane. (Not that any of us can afford a plane, we’d long ago have used that money on more and better rifles.) Dumb guy doing dumb thing is not an abrogation of your 2nd amendment rights.

I get it well hopefully he can get it back ?
