We’re about due for the next issue (January/February 2024) at this point. Up until the management transition, each issue would normally arrive a few days ahead of the first named month on the cover, i.e. The Nov/Dec issue would come in late October, and the Jan/Feb issue would arrive in late December. Starting with the change in management, arrival times moved back a couple of weeks. This last one was the latest arrival I can remember, though.

Mr. Gatliff used to be involved with a trekking journal called On the Trail, but it went under years ago. I bought a few single issues, but I didn’t subscribe. It was an interesting magazine, but nowhere close to the quality of Muzzleloader.

As the delays with the Nov/Dec 2023 issue were widespread and the amount of delay considerable, I would hope the editor might address this with an explanation in an upcoming issue of the magazine. I think the editorial staff is probably pretty small, and maybe even just family. A serious illness in one individual may be enough to have an effect.

We’ll see what the mailman brings In the coming weeks.

Best regards,

Notchy Bob

In days gone by I would've got the Jan./Feb issue a week ago. Oh well...

I received my November/December issue on the 21st of December. I saw that feature article about the Masonic Mountain Men raffle, and that nice Jim Parker Hawken they were offering as the prize. The drawing was to have been on December 24th, but I looked it up online and I believe the deadline for raffle entries was on December 20th, so I still missed out. I’m not certain I would have entered, but I would have considered it, for sure. It was a nice rifle and the money goes to worthy causes. I hope the raffle was a success.

We’ll see when the next issue gets here. It would be about due now, under normal circumstances.

Yes a new waiting begins...

As long as I am replying, I might as well correct this also. On The Trail did not go under. It was combined with MUZZLELOADER when I purchased the magazine. See the editorial from On The Trail Volume 20, No.2 (April/May 2013) - also printed on the On The Trail website - www.onthetrail.com

Dear Friends,

I hope that this issue finds you all in good health and good spirits.

I have some very exciting news that I would like to share with you all. As of March 1st, 2013, I am now the owner and publisher of MUZZLELOADER magazine. I was approached by Bill Scurlock a few years ago as he was thinking towards his eventual retirement and the future of the magazine. In 2007, Bill asked if I would be interested in taking over the magazine. Of course my anwer was yes. I was very honored that he and Linda chose me to continue on their publication. I am also incredibly humbled by this prospect as well. I will also add that Bill isn't quite ready to retire yet, he will continue publishing books dedicated to our hobby and working on various other projects relating to the hobby as well.

Bill and Linda Scurlock have both done a fantastic job producing MUZZLELOADER, it is a very high quality magazine and I hope that I can follow their lead in maintaining the same level of quality.

I have written several times in the past that it is because of MUZZLELOADER that I am where I am. Buster Grubbs, the same family friend who my father and I followed to our first rendezvous, introduced me to MUZZLELOADER in 1995 and it was through the articles in MUZZLELOADER that I fell in love with history and started down the path that I am following today.

Unfortunately, this great news is also somewhat bittersweet. This will be the final issue of On The Trail. I am going to combine On The Trail with MUZZLELOADER. I think if I tried to keep publishing both, On The Trail would eventually become watered down as I focused on MUZZLELOADER.

The On The Trail subscriber list will be merged with the MUZZLELOADER list and the duplicates will be combined. For instance if you have a subscription to both and you have three issues left with MUZZLELOADER and one issue left with On The Trail, you will have four issues coming of MUZZLELOADER after the merger. If you were not a subscriber to MUZZLELOADER before, then you will have however many issues you had left on your On The Trail subscription.

All of our writers have agreed to remain on board and will be added to the roster of writers at MUZZLELOADER. I feel that MUZZLELOADER and On The Trail are the two best publications in our hobby and combining them will result in the best publication.

The merger will start with the May/June issue of MUZZLELOADER. May/June will be my first issue and it will be the next issue that you, our subscribers, will receive.

I hope that you all will continue to enjoy our publication and that you will also continue to support us in the coming years.

Thank you all very much.
Until the next issue, I remain,
Your Most Humble & Obedient Servent,
Jason W. Gatliff, ed.

Still haven’t received the April/May issue.
There’s really no good excuse for this. It’s been going on too long.
I won’t be renewing my subscription.

The Mar/Apr issue was mailed out on April 18th - 2 weeks ago today, hopefully you will receive it soon. If you have not received it after May 23rd, contact me and after we confirm your address, I will send you a replacement copy.

I am not making any excuses, there was a delay with the Nov/Dec issue, which was my fault, that delay has caused other delays down the line. I am working hard to get us back on schedule but it is taking me longer than I had hoped or anticipated. The May/June issue is at the printers and I am expecting it to mail out around May 15th and if all goes according to plan the July/August issue will be mailed out on time around the middle of June.

I hope that you will reconsider your renewal.
