Well how about 'blower' or 'non-blower'. In reference to the blowing down the barrel threads.

Too many people today use the following phrases out of context with absolutely no idea as to their true origins and meanings:

"going off half-cocked"

"like a flash in the pan"

"loaded for bear"

"shooting your wad"

"lock, stock and barrel"

Sadly, that seems to be what passes for a modern education gets you these days... seemingly public schools these days only 'teach' enough for pupils to pass state-mandated testing to ultimately achieve more taxpayer funding, all the while indoctrinating unwitting and unthinking entitled students with contemporary propaganda... too many parents send their offspring to public schools merely for 'daycare' and for free meal handouts (which should not be the school's function!)

Back in the 1950's and '60's before we had such Minorities getting Free whatever, there were actual hungry (Caucasian) kids and thinking schools took care of them. My Dad was one of the Principals who did so. He was generally far to the right; I think his favorite students were, ah, some of the troublemakers.

(which should not be the school's function!) and to receive their participation awards for doing nothing!

Now...does "go off half-cocked" mean that one ventures forth without adequate preparation or does it refer to a defective lock?
Both.
I was called canoe killer by a few. While in a Canoe shoot I thought I could save some seconds if I shot a pistol at my first target and continue on to the second without having to load my rifle.
My gun was on half cock caught on my bag strap pulled back far enough to skip half cock without being fully cocked could have been tragic for me it was just a lesson learned and went off shooting a hole in the boat. Umph

It's used (misused) often today. Some think it means to walk away with an attitude. I've always thought it to be analogous in the sense of someone speaking or acting out without thinking.

Got one for ya, wife and I went to a gun show together, whilst at the gunshow we purchased some .530 roundballs which asked her to put into her purse so we wouldn’t set them down and walk off with them. Anyhow when I got home she stated “ don’t forget your balls are in my purse” ..... 🙄🙄😕
At least she gave them back.

You are correct. and misused even by the common definitions.

But then, there are many people who use words like Axe in the place of Ask. and so forth.
There are many illiterates and otherwise uneducated or undereducated people being graduated from primary schools now. We have no standards of education remaining in place.
