Good day gentlemen, I though that I would start a thread on ou favourite starts-to-the-day. I must say that when I wake up on a cold crisp mornign and roll out of my blanket, there is no breakfast that I look forward to more than plain old cornmeal pancakes with a drop of maple syrup. Quick, simple and filling.

How about you folks?
 
Pancakes are great before ya go hunting in the cold mornings. I like homemade molasses on mine, really perks ya up, so you are more alert on the treestand or stalking through the woods deer hunting. :thumbsup:
 
I can't eat pancakes unless it is really a chilly morn and then enjoy blueberry with maple syrup or honey atop and couple of sausage patties. and one sunnyside.
other favorite is fryed fish with grits which I ate this morning. trout and taters when camped is good also.
 
fried taters with onion n garlic and crumbled up sausage in it. Maybe a sunnyside up egg or two just to dip the bread in. I usually put maple syrup on my spuds, that savory sweet taste is so satisfying, and a big yepper to that steamen hot cup a joe. Kings don't eat as good as everybody has listed hehehe
 
Good evening folks, could one of you kind people explain what grits are as it is something that we either do not have in England, or we know by a different name.

I would particularly like to try the above receipt, as anything with cheese and butter has to be good!
 
It's kind of like cream of wheat made from corn? best as I can describe it. My wife swears by it.... I swear at it lol

It's really just coarse ground corn meal (sort of).

Grits are a food of American Indian origin common in the Southern United States and mainly eaten at breakfast. They consist of coarsely ground corn, or sometimes alkali-treated corn (hominy). They are also sometimes called sofkee or sofkey from the Muskogee (Creek) language word. Grits are similar to other thick maize-based porridges from around the world, such as polenta, or the thinner farina.

Grits are usually prepared by adding one part grits to two-to-three parts boiling water, sometimes seasoned with salt or sugar. They are usually cooked for 15”“20 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the grits become a porridge-like consistency. As grits expand when they are cooked, they need to be stirred periodically to prevent sticking and forming lumps.
 
Do you need wheat flour in the mix for corn pancakes? Would someone please post a receipe for corn pancakes. Woodbutcher
 
Crumbled up sausage fried with 'taters and onion. When the taters and sausage are just about done crack a few eggs into the mess and stir. Cook until the eggs are done. Sometimes called "Pre-lube" in certain circles.
Only way to make it better is if ya got some biscuits underneath and gravy to pour on top. :thumbsup:

And wash it down with a quart of coffee.
 
Good morning my friend, you simply need a couple of handfulls of cornmeal, an egg and some water. Leave the misx to stand for a while to allow the cornmeal to soak. If it looks too runny -add more cornmeal. If it looks too stiff - add more water. Fry it in butter. Cover with maple syrup when done, or you might try molasses. Blueberries are good with it too.
 
Thank you for the explaination about grits my friend. I have actually cooked the stuff and didnt know it! Now that I understand how popular and authentic it is I shall try to actively promote it around the camp.
 
Many years ago I took a trip to Pennsylvanian. I went out to eat breakfast and when I ordered grits! The waitress brought me cream of wheat! Lol.

A very good friend from New York come down for a visit. When we went out to eat, he looked at the menu then ask me what a grit was!

In the Movie “My cousin Vine” They do a humors seen dealing with Grits.

Apparently Grits are a Southern food.

To make Cheese grits follow the instructions on the box of grits then just before grits are done add about a ½ cup or a cup of sharp Cheddar or mild Monterey Jack Or you can add a little of both. When the cheese has melted serve with a dab of butter on top of grits.

Man! I know what I'm having for breakfast now!

I must be the only one who eats grits with peanut butter in them.............watch yer top knot.............
 
Are we talking Ronde camp or primitive trek camp. The reason I ask is, how do you pack in eggs without having scrambled eggs in your haversack? :confused:
