Bumped into a friend at a gun show recently and he mentioned he had it and he let me have it for a heck of a deal I think, its 28ga 42" barrel sparks great, seems like quality parts for less than a box of parts, unfired too, kinda plain but so am I, any ideas on what style if any this fits into? maybe some amateur's idea of a smoothie? should make a good woods gun for the price im sure, any opinions are welcome, thanks

A southern Poorboy fowler? I love the front end treatment of the forestock, it looks like it grew onto the barrel. Turtle front sight is a nice touch. Architecture is beautiful, too. The lock has only one bolt in poorboy style, I'm told most flintlocks benefit from a front lockbolt because of all the stresses involved in use, so I'd be tempted to add one. Beautiful gun, you have a gun for life and a friend who loves you! It's every thing I'd want in a using, hunting gun. Wear it out, give them East Texas critters a home in your Dutch Oven! George.

It looks like a TVM or Jackie Brown style.
The butt plate looks like the "Virginia" they use.
The lock looks like a Siler.
English style trigger guard.
The single lock screw and "Tennessee" style side washer and the wood shape at the muzzle is typical of Jackie Brown.
So to answer your question on the gun's style, it's a mixture of a lot of guns. I'm sure it is a good handling gun so just shoot it and don't worry over what to call it.

They're not commenting on the nice octagon to round barrel which, with that stock, makes it handle very well I'm sure. Good, simple, gun. Caliber is a little limiting as .55 bore but that's not too bad. A "lifetime" gun. Ya did well!

My first thought also. Jackies are not (usually) octagon to round. This one is.

Kinda looks like sitting foxes poor boy fowler. :idunno: our concept of schools and styled is an artifact created by collectors today. I would call that a southern style fowler post AWI . Many guns were made from a mishmash of parts. The "five civilized tribes" had gun makers who were restocking old guns and rebuilding them before 1800. In the end if you are uncomfortable with an unstyled gun that you can't name 'what it is" send it to me and I will be glad to hide it for you. I will even call it what it is for sure, A FINE LOOKING GUN.

It's very similar to my Jackie Brown, but mine is a smooth rifle instead of a fowler, so has wooden patch box, cheek piece, side plate and trigger guard with a grip rail. The treatment at the muzzle, the profile of the barrel, length of the octagonal section, lock, butt plate are all identical. I have two Jackie Brown guns and both are signed on the top of the barrel with J. Brown in script.

Gun isn't signed anywhere I can see, not sure what the wood is but its very light, about 6 1/2 -7 lbs pretty slim too, carries about like my SMR from Tip, when I first looked at it, it screamed poor boy it was so plain and simple I had to have it.

Very sweet. I love the clean simplicity. The way the forend was done is really nice. I'd be more than happy to tote that through the oaks and hickories in search of squirrels. What's it weigh?

Weighs around 6 1/2 - 7 lbs on the bathroom scales, wife says they been broke for years though :grin: it's very light for sure.

Dave, can you measure and figure the profile of the barrel? How wide is the octagonal section, and is it tapered? Is the round part tapered, and if so, is it a straight taper to the muzzle, or a short section of taper just beyond the wedding band and then straight, no more taper, to the muzzle?

The octagonal section is 1" non tapered going to about .950 at the wedding band and tapers for about 8" or so down to .750 and continues the same size to the muzzle.

As I suspected. I think your gun is made by Jackie Brown and that the barrel is of the type DOM, Drawn Over Mandrel.

I've been shooting a J. Brown gun with a barrel of that type for the last 18 years and could not be more pleased with it. Congratulations, you did very well in deciding to buy your gun.

My guess is Jackie Brown too. I'd say it's not signed because it was bought in the white from J.Brown and finished applied by the original buyer.

Many thanks for all the info and kind words, I think she will do just fine,I have a hardwood bottom over run with cat squirrels and when you see them they ain't sittin still, I use to hunt them with a Stevens single .410 so this should be fun, now to track down some shot and give her a try.

The finish seems a tad light.....I would get some powder smoke & a sprinkling of small game blood on that ASAP!!!
